Filmmaking and Astrology

Hello everyone, I've recently found a moderate outlet for my passion for visual arts, more specifically, filmmaking. I have put a lot of energy into the subject in recent years, and oppurtunities are starting to blossom.

I'm curious if anyone has researched film as related to astrology. What placements show success in this area? I would imagine that the 10th house has something to do with it, as well as the sign Leo? Just wondering....Any one here interested in film/media?

Let's talk creative arts folks!

I've been making films since 1993 but not commercial or mainstream films; mostly feature-length art films (watch clips on my profile page). For me, all of astrology can somehow relate with cinema as both astrology and cinema explore a vast spectrum of the human condition. The astrologcial componenst that have felt most resonant with my own filmmkaing have been Neptune and the Moon, the 4th, 5th, 7th, 11th and 12th houses, Leo, Pisces, Aquarius, Libra and Cancer.

Cinema is very much about how imagery acts on the psyche, like the way memory (Moon) and imagination (Neptune) does, to open up the internal landscape of the cinema within. Some say the real film is playing in our heads when we watch it on the big screen. Cinema is also about storytelling (Leo, Cancer , 5th and 4th House) and relationships (7th House, Libra). The actual making of films is very Aquarius/11th House. Filmmaking is a teamwork process; people band together around a common purpose and find their common unity, or community.

Jupiter/Sagg/9th House also come into play as the film director's singular vision, whatever that may be, which guides the entire production from start to finish. Of the 11 films I have completed, only one includes any astrological references and that one is called THE MIND IS A LIAR AND A WHORE; it's a dark comedy. Here's the trailer for it. See if you can spot the astrologer:

Wow Sherpa, I must see that film. Looks great! Did you write/direct?
      Thanks for your wonderful thoughts....

I have thought alot about my eleventh house lately on account of a recent interest in composite charts....Turns out that several people I've been involved with and I have loaded 11th houses. Including my sister and I who have been very close our entire lives, live together, and are collaborating on film projects together. 6 planets in 11....

Composite charts bring about strange findings; interesting correlations to be made. For instance, my sister and I's composite chart is uncannily almost the same natal chart of our grandmother(mother's mom)....Like our mother gave birth to her mother?, Or an energy very similiar to that of her mother to learn lessons from the lives she was to be connected to. Just thinking, My mother was born to an Aries, has a Libra n. node, and I've had the pleasure of living through the veil of libra....The capricorn moon may point to the pleasures of this role....But hey, what else are we here for? Relationships are the glue binding us all together....

In Jyotish (Vedic astrology) we look at the dharma houses (1, 5, & 9) to see what a person's talents are. We look at planets related to these houses in the rasi (main) chart and the navamsa (9th harmonic) chart.

It's just a guess, but I would say a strong connection between the dharma houses and the Moon & Venus would indicate talents in filmmaking. Whether or not you are successful at that has to do with the 10th house, the house of career status. But you have to have the talents first.

I looked up some directors, and I did notice this trend. Walk Disney has Venus ruling the Moon and placed in the 5th house, and in the navamsa has Moon in the 5th aspected by Venus. Francis Ford Coppola has Moon aspecting the 1st and exalted Venus ruling the 5th, but no connection between Moon & Venus. Alfred Hitchcock has Moon ruling the 5th and placed in the 9th. In the navamsa, Moon and Venus exchange signs between the 1st & 10th houses. Steven Spielberg has his 1st lord with both Moon & Venus. In his navamsa chart, Venus rules the 1st but there is no connection with the Moon. Michael London has Moon in 5th ruled by Venus, and in the navamsa Venus rules the 5th and is ruled by the Moon.

Here is the data if you want to explore these charts yourself:

    Michael London
    10/31/1936 @12:00
    Jamaica, NY

    Steven Spielberg
    12/18/1946 @06:16
    Cincinnati, OH

    Alfred Hitchcock
    8/13/1899 @20:00
    London, England

    Francis Ford Coppola
    4/7/1939 @01:38
    Detroit, MI

    Walt Disney
    12/5/1901 @00:30
    Chicago, IL

I love Hitchcock! Had a marathon recently.

I hadn't realized that Steven Spielberg was from Cincinnati. Strange, as was Charles Mason, I recently learned.

Thanks for the info; will have to check out those charts..

I'd love to get more into making films, but my video camera just busted ...ughh
I've done lots of little projects..music video type stuff and have enjoyed it ALOT. I tend to change quite a bit between my mediums...i stagnate creatively if i stay in one place too long :S
Actually, one of my favorite bands that i had on my friends list on myspace, just contacted me and asked me to do their album cover for them........yayyyyy!!!!!!!!!!! (it would be cool to work on a video for them too :)
I have venus in the 1st house and neptune in my 10th, but other than that, not sure what else in my chart shows anything..
Maybe stars on the midheaven are important for this too?

    hey, Melissa

I have no relation to the film making business/experience/urge or whatever, but looking at your chart, I can see great potential in art making-sensitivity, imagination, creativity, and most importantly, the will and stamina to turn fantasy into reality.

First of all, your chart is very Cardinal, which means you have tons of ambition and the courage to start something new, and experiment with the old.
First of all, your Sun and AC are in Libra, almost conjunct-but anyways, pretty close to one another, making it easier for you to find your deepest motivations and your clearest purposes(the Sun) on this Earth(AC).

Then, there's the Sun-Mercury conjunction in the 12th, showing great creativity and sensitivity to nuances and all fluid forms of expression.

A strong Mercury could help in film making, since one of the biggest reasons why tv was invented(tv meaning video recordings, in general, as well) was to better preserve and spread messages and ideas-Mercury's domain.
Film making is spreading images, as well, though it can also imply spreading fantasies and illusions. Anyways, a strong Mercury influence will make you feel more at home and natural about the whole use of technology. A strong Neptune can help you understand and intuit the nature of illusion and the power of art.

You have a pretty strong Neptune, as well. Apart from the Sun-Mercury conjunction in the 12th, you also have a pretty cool Neptunian "cluster" over there - Moon-Mars-Jupiter all conjunct one another, and all conjunct Neptune, AND all of them in the 3rd house.
Yes, you're a natural with visual arts.
It's especially interesting that your Moon-Jupiter conjunction is in the first Decanate of Capricorn, while your Mars-Neptune conjunction is in the last Decanate of Sagittarius, also known as The LEO Decanate of Sagittarius. Yep, it's pretty obvious you've got the creative bug.
Some people forget to take Decanates into account, which I think is totally silly. It really makes the reading job a lot easier. The whole Decanate theory really works, and I mean REALLY.

But just to make it more obvious, we can do the math: the Sun-said to show one's purpose on life is conjunct Mercury, "the Messenger", in the 12th house, house of Neptune and Pisces.
It also squares your Moon-Mars-Jupiter-Neptune cluster in the 3rd house, which shows that you see your greatest purpose to be art making, rather than simply transmitting ideas and news.

Then, there's the Moon and Mars-said to be a person's greatest sources of motivation and assertive drive-both conjunct Neptune, planet of artistic expression and the world’s chapter called “messages from beyond”-what better proof of an artistic drive?

And, at last, but not least-lol-your Scorpio Venus is tightly conjunct to both Saturn, and Pluto, showing great emotionalism, great sense of observation and intuition, as well as a concrete, material channeling(Saturn) of one’s artistic drive(Venus) with the purpose of transforming yourself, as well as others(Pluto).

I haven't read through all the posts so I'm not sure if someone has already hit these points but I have heard that having Jupiter in Leo in the 10th house is a good indication of stage and film talent. I personally believe that it all comes down to passion and study.

Many actors and filmakers also have a heavy Neptune or Lots of Piscean in thier charts. In film, you have to have an imagination and I think that's why the pisces/neptune characteristics have so much importance in thier charts.

Just submerge yourself in your craft and you will succeed.

Film making is related to Neptune aspects, especially Mooon 120 Neptune, precise, meaning that the Moon must have 0 latitude to catch up with Neptune aspect. A good movie will require Saturn aspects in order to last. As movie critic I have Moon 120 Neptune aspect precise, with Uranus Saturn 120 Sun, objectiveness. Neptune must be prominent, mine is I.C. in order to have Gothic flavor. Vampires have it on the ascendant. Bunuel will have different aspects from Spielberg. Kurosawa is no match for Disney and so on.

I think it's interesting to look at how directors excel on diffrent styles and themes that they usually navigate on. All filmmakers have strong imagination, vision, and the hard work and collaboration that go with the actual making of films. But what makes one's work unique or distinct from others, now that's something to look at.
How different is David Lynch's natal chart from let's say Spielberg.. or Bergman from Fellini..
Why is it that Spielberg is so good at showing childlike fantasies on screen, while Lynch is good at weird, hypnotic flow that deals with the illusion of beauty and its underlying ugliness? Why was Luis Bunuel fond of surreal plots and biting religious satire, while Bergman chose to tackle the struggle of the human spirit? Will their natal chart show these propensities?

What makes a director well received by most audiences while others always tend to make films that receive strong negative reactions. Some directors are perfectly good at feeding the status quo while others tend to shake up the whole system, push the envelope a little further, and became sort of a pioneer for setting a new standard. Would that be the influence of uranus in their imagination? Hmmm...

        Wonderful Ideas!

It certainly takes a certain type to enjoy Lynch films; I personally think he's brilliant....

Overly hollywood films generally don't do much for me; but the middle ground is huge........
