If you're not familiar by now, the Back to Basics Series offers the tribe the chance to relook at astrology and discuss astrology to whatever our abilities and knowledge. You don't have to be an expert with 20 years experience to post here! You can just be an amateur or enthusiast!

The idea is to just discuss astrology with a focus on going back to the basics! There are no adverts for my latest book or upcoming course or to promote my website! I have started it with the Sun and we've (Sherpa has chosen to contribute also) worked our way up as far as Neptune. Everyone is encouraged to post regardless of age, experience or knowledge!

Neptune, the planet relating to dissolution, boundlessness, spirituality, mysticism and also drugs and poetry etc.

What are your experiences of Neptune? What is Neptune like in the different elements?

Neptune as a Dissolving Force of Compassion

Like the steady crash of waves on the rocky seashore, the transpersonal force of Neptune symbolizes a shock of unity through gradual erosion of boundaries, borders and barriers that have isolated us. Unity, as the term is used here, infers an indivisibility with all things; all existence is unified by virtue of all things existing...unity at the level of existence itself. Astrological Neptune also represents the invisible, pervasive force of our dreams. From our highest expectations, ideals, and aspirations, to the night dreams where our dreambody dreams itself awake, Neptune symbolizes the spectrum of sublime immateriality: Of inspiration and madness, poetry and insanity, music and noise.

In context to life in the material world, Neptune refers to those areas subject to our greatest disappointments and disillusionments, as well as our most profound epiphanies and enlightenments. In relation to ego personality, this transpersonal force acts as solvent -- a kind of acid bath -- dissolving such self-imposed, arbitrary divisions as 'us' and 'them,' 'me' and 'you,' 'good' and 'evil,' to expose the underlying unity of existence. Neptune as the great leveler.

Neptune's natal placement suggests to me an area where one tends to be a medium for the gods and where one is, in a sense, played by larger forces than one perceives or can perceive. Neptune sits where a completely open-ended, uncensored and all-encompassing merging occurs with the territory its given house placement refers to. The slippery side of natal Neptune, especially when activated, shows where and how you are apt to lose all sight and perspective, where boundaries disappear and how all sense of proportion falls apart at the seams. Like the Twelfth House of its native home, Neptune symbolizes a state of sightless navigation where intuition and faith act as guides and where, in the depths, all becomes law.

With the exception of scattered pockets of children, artists and visionaries, my assumption is that the dreambody and dreamtime connections of western society have atrophied. To the extent there's any truth to this, I venture to say that western astrological systems have also offered up a rather paltry, limited and pathological definition of Neptune mirroring our spiritual bankruptcy. A good example can be seen in the charts of alcoholics, many of which carry hard Neptune aspects; in particular, Neptune squaring or opposing the Sun, Moon, Mars, Venus or Mercury. Alcoholism occurs for many reasons, manifesting in ways similar and different for each alcoholic.

One theory of mine is that human beings are possessed by a spiritual need for disappearance; we occasionally feel the need to make things go away. Some people watch too much TV; others meditate. Alcoholics drink. This spiritual need may be stronger in those with strongly aspected natal Neptunes. Maybe a "bottle of spirits" brings the alcoholic closer to the spirit world. It certainly makes his or her presence go away. Ask any child of alcoholic parents....

"One theory of mine is that human beings are possessed by a spiritual need for disappearance; we occasionally feel the need to make things go away."

I agree. I'd also say that a complementary need to making things go away is the need to go beyond ourselves and feel united with existence (or God, or the universe, etc.) on the deepest level.

The ways in which we do this differ, and so do the outcomes.

I checked the chart of an extremely talented artist I know who also has an alcohol problem that he refused to acknowledge for several years. His Neptune is unsuspected, except for a conjunction to the MC. No planets or points in Pisces, which is intercepted in the 12th house. He has a lot of trouble with spirituality (one of his drunken tirades was on the emptiness of existence), and is very disconnected with reality sometimes, getting lost in fantasy worlds (his moon is also completely unsuspected so he has trouble recognizing an expressing emotions as well)... however his creative talents are so great that if he applied himself, he could become well-known easily.

When I first started studying astrology, I picked up a few of Liz Green's books on various planets. I started to notice that even the way that I approached reading her books was related to the underlying concepts of each planet. I didn't know very much about the planets at this point, so I didn't do it 'on purpose' ~ but noticing the different ways that I approached each book helped me to better understand the way that each works...

Liz Green's Neptune book is a hefty tome ~ I would open to a page at random & just read a bit ~ I'm pretty sure that I eventually finished the whole book, but my memory of it is *fuzzy*.

I approached the Saturn book in a much more serious manner. I read it cover to cover, diligently highlighting excerpts & creating a Saturn through the signs & houses chart inside the back cover.

    love all-ways,

Your psychic abilities in motion. Have you ever tried slipping book under your pillow???

Kind of off-topic, but what interests me is the specificity of the Moon and Neptune in terms of psychic or "alternate" abilities. I've read that the Moon can denote psychic ability and so can Neptune. I personally think it may be because the Moon is instinct (ability to recognize psychic patterns) and Neptune, as we see above, is boundary-breaking and release. What do you guys think?

I have met a few people who've had Neptune conjunct ASC who have had troubles with alcoholism or drug abuse. But at the same time, those people were highly artistic. Tortured artist deal, I guess.

I have Nep in 6th House. I don't particularly understand Nep, but I'm incline to think of that as a tough position. It's almost like Nep is dissolving all that focus and relentless tinkering the House of Virgo stands for in terms of self-adjustment and daily work. Sometimes, although you wouldn't think it based on general defintions of Neptune, that what he really requires is focus. Almost like, when you start to meditate or pray or drift off to sleep even, there's a bit of focus required. To get to that "other" level, that higher plane. By house and aspect maybe Neptune is pointing us to this, telling us how to harness his rather unharnessable energy. Almost like, take control in order to let go of control. Neptune is the great ocean. And to float in the ocean, you have to control your body in some way, right? You have to get your breathing right. You need to calm. Otherwise you're tense and sink. But once you get that calm, you float. And it's almost like you've become one with the waters.

Neptune seems to be in my 12th house and i am of the Sagittarian Neptune Generation... A very confusing place for Neptune as i cant see the Mystery for the Mist... the inner landscape has been ever-present and elusive for as long as i can remember, perhaps longer... i feel very active when the Neptuninan energies roll in, and am actually a bit clingy when i comes to my dreams...

I did notice that t. Neptune is opposing my Saturn, and t. Saturn is square my natal Neptune... any advice on this unusual exchange of forces?

          tension with little integrity...

I have something similar - neptune square sun, saturn opposite sun - natally (but not quite a t-square).

In your case the sun isn't involved - so I doubt the experiences would be quite the same really. I think that both saturn and neptune have a sense about them of submittal each in a different way. Saturn would involve things like the law, structures, commitments and things of that nature that one submits to. Neptune would be that "letting go" that derrick explained so well. Perhaps a bit less of a conscious, directed, controlled thing .... a bit less a matter of will and a bit more a matter of wonder and acceptance.

What I was thinking was something like

            committing to dissolving
            or dissolving commitments

I guess either way there would be an importance in choosing what you submit to ... what current to "go with the flow" with ... what things to let go of and what things to solidify your commitment to through a deeper/ more complete submission and acceptance.

I think that makes sense in a way.
Both moon and neptune seem to have this tendency to blur boundaries between people and touch or move people emotionally. Both also seem (to me) to have a sense of awareness and sensitivity.

Hmm, what about jupiter and neptune residing in the same house, do they sometimes cancel each other out or does one end up taking turns being the shiney lightbulb while the other goes along for the ride?

Something I read in another article mentions, treating money like its someone else's, otherwise it has a way of disappearing rather easily. This actually makes sense to me, oddly enough, especially when I ponder my life's experiences with money thus far. Easier for me to handle money when I know its going to pay off a loan or to take care of bills or for someone/something else. If its for me, it becomes distracting.

Having Neptune in 2nd with Jupiter in conjuction w/Sagittarius, then saturn over there in the 8th...Taurus. Lol...

Like money existing for a higher purpose? That makes sense for neptune + jupiter H2!

When I think about conjunctions I always picture the two planets working simultaneously together most of the time.

When I think about jupiter and neptune it seems that each has a component of the spiritual within them. Jupiter would be more of the idealogies and dogmas neptune would be more of the "otherworldly" experiences and relationships. So their overlap might be in some form of a belief system about the spiritual - although there may be other combinations.
Sagittarius is a pretty expansive and adventurous (as well as lucky and bold) sign to my understanding ..

Now for some reason it is hard to see just how this would fit in house 2 given a materialistic sense of H2. But if we look at house 2 in terms of values instead it might make more sense.

I have a feeling there may be more to this planetary picture, though ... squares or oppositions or significant trines to this conjunction could significantly modify it.

Well I'm new at this kind of so if that is how you experience it - then you know better than I do!
BUT ... I always felt as if the one moved with the other.

I think this is one thing that makes stelliums of many planets a bit of a challenge. In order to harness the energy one needs to find a way to coordinate all those parts together at once. The planets seem to even amplify each other when that coordination is found ... or shut each other down without the coordination - at least that is what I have seen so far.

Hi guys.My name is Dionysus(yeah my real name:P) and I have come to use astrology solely as a way to either Prove or disprove as well as help other psychics along.

In my study I have found that Having a Prominent Neptune(angular) as well as connected to a luminary or the ascendant as being a main significant as the most exceptional psychic ability.
