    Thanks mem. The Archetypal realm is what got me into Astrology in the first place, and the Signs and Archetypes seem to go together like Sandy and Danny in Grease.

    I looked in my notebooks and thought I would share a few more with each sign that I've come across along the way:

    Aries: Rebel, Hero, Feminist, Advocate, Knight, Gambler :: Pop culture: Aragorn, Luke Skywalker, Lara Croft, Neo
    Taurus: Hedonist, Artist, Architect, Sensualist, Farmer :: Mythology: Aphrodite
    Gemini: Messenger, Trickster, Scribe, Eternal Child, Fool, Gossip, Guide
    Cancer: Caretaker, Nurse, Rescuer, Cooks :: Pop culture: Betty Crocker, Aunt Em
    Leo: Actor, Entertainer, Artist :: Myth/Culture: King Arthur, Lion King, Hercules
    Virgo: Hermit, Secretary, Editor, Sacred Prostitute, Critic, Holistic Healer, Virgin, Technician, Renaissance Monks
    Libra: Mediator, Judge, Counselor, Victim, Advocate, Companion, Advisor :: Myth/Culture: King Solomon, Supreme Court Justice
    Scorpio: Destroyer, Historian, Healer, Femme Fatale, Depth Researcher, Dramatist, Grim Reaper, Phoenix
    Sagittarius: Intuitive, Sage, Teacher, Wounded Healer, Adventurer, Seeker, Priest, Judge, Fundamentalist :: Myth/Culture: Artemis, Indiana Jones, the Centaur
    Capricorn: Businessman, Entrepreneur, Boss, Authority, Principle, Governor, King, Tyrant, Victim, Workaholic :: Myth/Culture: Joan of Arc, Father Time
    Aquarius: Prometheus, Idealist, Outlaw, Visionary, Iconoclast, Rebel, Humanitarian, Astrologer, Inventor :: Myth/Culture: Noah (Noah’s Arc), Spock, Glinda the Good Witch
    Pisces: Dreamer, Artist, Addict, Victim, Messiah, Psychic :: Pop Culture: Mulder (X-Files)

    Do people with these respective Sun signs relate to any of the listed in this thread? As an Aries Sun I have definitely been drawn to anything and everything Heroic and Warrior-like over the course of my life.

      thank you, Shane ~

      especially for the added Virgo archetypes ~ I felt that the list I posted was, well, a bit 'frigid'.... not my experience of Virgo at all!

        When a planet moves into and through a sign, it awakens the archetypal issues connected with that sign, giving them an airing in the collective psyche. These archetypes are dynamic, and they can themselves evolve, as can society's response to them. The major issues connected with each sign, in an historical context and according to astrological theory, are as follows:
        Capricorn
        Organisational structures, physical/financial resources and land; tradition and institutional inertia; social and national forms, ancestry, inheritance, laws, institutions and customs; stability, age and posterity; governance, authority, hierarchical power, finance and economic imperatives; conformity, regularity, regimentation, consequences of the past. Being the opposite sign to Cancer, the polarity being explored here is one of security and its social, systematic, organisational arrangement.
        Aquarius
        Social principles, ideologies, ideals, plans and designs; collective issues, mass awareness and activity; social judgmentalism and projection, tribalism and nationalism, populism; idea-led activity, planning and forward legislation; humanitarianism, social values; enquiry, philosophy and science; invention, innovation and new technologies; administration and litigation; popular movements and secular concerns. Being the polar opposite of Leo, questions of leadership, power-legitimacy, democracy, mandate and the position and rights of the individual in society are very important here.
        Pisces
        Visionary activity, new perspectives and perceptions, shifting paradigms and goals; religious and artistic imagination, altruism, transcendentalism, monasticism, millennialism, escapism; melting, loosening and shifting of obsolete or arthritic structures; disintegration and loss or purpose or rationale; the mysterious and unexplainable; cults, beliefs, illusions and truths, underlying hidden realities, undercurrents, fermentation, surfacing of the unconscious; proliferation, derailment, underlying tides of change, preparation of the future. As the opposite sign to Virgo, possibility and manifestation, realities and unrealities, facts and visions and shifts of awareness or actuality are explored here.
        Aries
        Force of inevitable or timely change and progression, waves breaking, 'over the top'; breakaway from the past, abreaction to constraints and tradition; new scenarios, germination, expansion, application of possibilities; individualism, pioneering, heroism, rivalry, conquest; expressed energy, conviction, radicalism, strong ideas, impatience; deployed resources, engineering, asserted activity, power of force. As the opposite sign to Libra, compromise, accommodation and mutuality are counterposed with personal interest, initiative and competitiveness.
        Taurus
        Construction, establishment, consolidation, making it happen, overcoming, attrition; growth, fertility, creativity, ongoing forward motion; continuation, perpetuation, holding on, control; materialism, land- and resource-use, agriculture, conservation, assets, artisanry, crafts, business; sense of mission and adherence to principle or default pattern; dogged determination or opposition, stuckness, fixed agendas, ends justify means; enjoyment, indulgence, comfort. Being opposite to Scorpio, this axis contrasts endings and regeneration with perpetuation and posterity, and power and manifest reality are important.
        Gemini
        Fresh ideas and new interrelations and configurations; changes, realignments, divergences and convergences, reversals, changing places; meetings, marketplaces, communications and media, travel, information, ideas, news, connections; relativity, variegation, cross-pollination, lateral thinking; activity, hullabaloo, exchange; diversification, exploration. Being opposite to Sagittarius, Gemini gathers experience and sorts information while Sagittarius makes of it a bigger picture and wider context.
        Cancer
        Security, habit, protected sensitivities, pathos, intimacy, steadying down; human values and weaknesses, women, children, underprivileged, needy or helpless people, on the receiving-end; populations, minorities, ethnic identifications, families, kin; social caring, welfare and nutrition; territory, home-ground, xenophobia, classes, clans; leakages, trespasses, incursions; stasis, daily home life, homes and localities. Being opposite to Capricorn, the needs of people in relation to structures comes into focus.
        Leo
        Leadership, heroism, integrity, centrality, abundance, power, grandeur, predominance; master-victim issues, winning and losing, superiority-inferiority; creativity, drama and performance; grand culture, autocracy, patronage, aristocracy, feudalism, colonialism; class-war, divisiveness, schism, self-interest; symbols and trappings of power, magnanimity, greatness. Being opposite to Aquarius, leadership and society as a whole come into dynamic interplay.
        Virgo
        Order, system, organisational methods, harvesting and turning to use, storage, sense and commonsense; land and workforce, peasantry, human resources; midwifery, husbandry, horticulture; work, contributions, tools; coordination, intelligence, assimilation; service and slavery; the social contract, education, skills, woodwork, health; development, infrastructure, support- and backup-systems; subgroups, guilds, complexity and simplification, pruning, efficiency; protest and dissension, splitting hairs, microtechnologies, genetics. Being opposite to Pisces, overarching visions meet operational facts, and chaos meets order, amidst changeful situations.
        Libra
        Social relations, international diplomacy and exchange, shared interests; mutual accommodations, conflicts, contrariness, peacekeeping, peacebuilding, consensus; I-and-Thou, Them-and-Us; alliances, allegiances, treaties, ambassadors; oscillation between extremes, switches, re-balancings, retributions, relations; cohesion and resolution or alienation and dissent, war or peace; ideas, conventions, social values, folk-traditions, cultural cross-fertilisation. Being opposite to Aries, mutuality and individualism, cooperation and competition interact.
        Scorpio
        Inevitability and raw, bottom-line reality, real changes, power, getting to grips, showdowns, the fall of the axe; consequences, confrontation, engagement, breakthrough, nitty-gritty; regeneration, libido, sexuality; crucible, fusion, control, surgery, incision, precision; slaughter, endings, closedowns, squeezes, grimness; underlying rumbling and held-back disquiet, covert activity, implied threat, finality; power, exposure, manipulation; inquisition, detection, crime, secrecy, secret societies; hidden fears and sensitivities, taboos, guilt over transgression; survival, comeback, comeuppance, rebirth, taking the plunge, stepping into the Unknown. Opposite to Taurus, Scorpio makes something out of a disaster, while Taurus makes something out of our blessings.
        Sagittarius
        Expanding horizons, remission, relief, forgiveness, celebration; cultural expansion, higher education, learning, distant travel, pilgrimage, exotic goods and ways, cross-cultural exchange; the bigger picture, understanding, tolerance; wealth, territorial expansion, greatness, imperialism, conversion, zeal, seeking glory; enjoyment, excitement, positivity, profusion, excess; jurisprudence, philanthropy, charity; orthodoxy, religiosity, belief-systems; investment, sponsorship, forward thinking, grand ideas. Being opposite to Gemini, Sagittarius tries to make greater sense of things amidst the kaleidoscopic plethora of the wider world.

        There is a sequence to the zodiacal archetypes. Each follows on from, yet contrasts with, the previous one. Each sign's contribution to the whole begins as a new avenue of opportunity, and it ends by being established, an assumed fact of life, ready for a shift of theme in the sign to follow. Ingresses by planets into new signs bring shifts in the prevailing issues and public consensus, atmospheric changes of tone in the nature of the times.

        When an outer planet chugs through a sign, it reactivates that sign's bundle of archetypes, issues, angles, imagery, prevailing ideas and default patterns within the group psyche. The collective then responds by reinterpreting and re-enacting the outward expression of archetypes, according to the conventional wisdom of the time. The archetype itself can go through evolutionary changes, depending on what people do with possibilities offered them, an defined afresh each time an outer planet moves through a sign, stimulating an action-response from people. Yet this response is a product of human choice. Archetypal development can also, at times, and in certain respects, regress, as a result of retrogressive human responses to their times.

        If two or more outer planets move through a sign, or through two opposite signs, simultaneously or in close enough sequence, there will be great historical emphasis on the issues of those signs. Actions will be taken, styles adopted, consequences created, which all have lasting effects over time. These issues will eventually, sometimes long afterwards, resurface and be re-evaluated when the signs in question are revisited by the same, or by other planets.

        The zodiac has a beauty of its own, being a sequential program of archetypes, holographic feeling-imagery and patterning. The zodiac and its sequencing affects the tone of all longterm historical developments. Archetypal zodiacal patterns can be interpreted and acted on differently at different times – a sagittarian period can bring a florescence of tolerance, prosperity and goodwill, or an outburst of imperialistic, imposing behaviour and 'missions to civilise'. Most people are unaware they act out such archetypes, and historians, by tradition and belief, currently deny that there can be astrological influences in history. Nevertheless, these influences continue to do their work. And it helps to identify and understand them.

          Astrological groundrules 4:
          the Cycle of Aspects
          Here is a list of the aspects used in this ephemeris, with brief descriptions of how they work. Take note of the sequence of aspects, which play out a pattern in a complete cycle of motion and change which unfolds between any two planets. The aspects in bold are known as the 'main aspects'. The cycle divides into two hemicycles, waxing (+) and waning (-). Though most aspects are repeated in the waxing and waning hemicycles, they exist within different contexts, and thus, in timecycle research, waxing and waning aspects work quite differently from each other.

          * CONJUNCTION 0° Transition, end-beginning, potentiality-conclusion, watershed, where things have got to so far, life as it is, new starts, wide-open options

          + Quincunx 150° Expectancy, unsurety, seeking perspective, risk of disjunction/derailment, reconciling contradictions, the extra mile

          * OPPOSITION 180° Climax, resolution or conflict, signed & sealed, outcomes & results, actuality, the hump, goals reached or realities realised, tide-turning, intensity

          - Quincunx 210° Assimilation of experience and realignment of aims, new perspectives, renewal or loss of purpose, effects of results, where next?

            Hey Daniel, Mem and Shane!

            These archetypes seem very helpful in appretiating the unique contribution each architype makes to life....I like the nuances expressed in these archetypes...I have often thought that pisces might be about belief itself while saggitarius covers the "belief-systems"...maybe it sounds like the same thing but it is not...

            On the one hand you have those who believe in God but not organized religion...
            On the other hand you can also find those who keep up with their religion in a cultural sense...but do not personalize it to their own belief if you know what I mean...

            Also the difference between monasticism and monasteries...the monastary itself might be more piscean as a place of retreat and faith and introspection...the monastic life is typically quite ordered, synchronized, and structured...very virgo

            The slight nuances...I like it...
            That is one thing I could grow in! :)

            Thank you! I almost want to copy and paste these somewhere so I have them for ready reference...yeah I think I will :)

    One thing FJ got me to thinking on was archetypes for sign axes...Daniel's post seemed to touch on it a bit but maybe you all can help me form a list for these as well here...as my understanding of the balancing of these axes is yet so new...

    Maybe some of you could fill these in:

    aries-libra
    taurus-scorpio
    gemini-sagittarius
    cancer-capricorn
    leo-aquarius
    virgo-pisces

      I'm a fan of astrologer Moses Siregar III astrologyforthesoul.com/axisaxes.html

      The Six Axes in Astrology

      This is a very important page intended to show that opposite signs have the same exact core. All of the statements below are completely true of both of the signs to which they refer. This can point out often overlooked dimensions of the signs. The axis names below are intended to be more humorous than anything.

      Aribra: "Warrior Axis" (Aries and Libra, 1 and 7)

      About: The use of physical, creative, mental, attractive, and diplomatic power to succeed in one's endeavors. The strength of detachment to preserve individuality and freedom. The balance of independence and relationship. The proper acceptance and release of anger, allowing one to transform anger into energy.

      Strength: Being effective in getting what you want (done).

      Weaknesses: Ego, selfish orientation (whether obvious or concealed), love tainted with personal agendas, abuse of power or intelligence, manipulation, losing sight of our actual oneness and enforcing separation because of selfish action or the scheming mind, inability to embrace emotion compassionately.

      Paradoxical Solution: The only true warrior learns to use their gifts for the good of all, constantly transcending the identification of oneself as an individual separate from others, and coming to identify oneself as the all. A victory for 'me' becomes a victory for all. A victory for 'you' becomes a victory for 'me.'
      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      Taurpio: "Axis of True Being" (Taurus and Scorpio, 2 and 8)
      About: The confrontation of the self with its shadow - its deepest pain, and the initial avoidance of that pain through addictions, eventually leading to the healing of the self (and therefore others) through persistent self-acceptance in facing one's 'issues.' Being able to BE, and needing nothing more.
      Strength: Potential for tremendous self-sufficiency, and the radiation of peace and love.
      Weaknesses: Tendency to look to external supports as indulgences and avoidances. Looking outside to avoid being fully present. Difficulty in surrendering control and in embracing emotion. Lazy or difficult habits that maintain inertia and prolong the inevitable.
      Paradoxical Solution: If one can cultivate True Beingness, then one really needs nothing more. Yet that is the first time one can handle the presence of wealth, power, wisdom, food, drink, sex, and relationships without misusing them to attempt to establish an external security. One can fully be present to the world and all of its pleasures only when one does not need them as supports.
      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

      Geminittarius: "Axis of Innocent Play" (Gemini and Sagittarius, 3 and 9)

      About: Fun. The flow of creative, artistic and mental abilities coupled with the yearning to experience, know, and express more. The challenge to discipline, commit, and narrow the focus so one can express and experience The Truth / True Creativity.

      Strength: A playful, open spirit willing to be open to new possibilities, and enjoy them.

      Weaknesses: Lack of focus and maturity; creative potential neglected through scattered forces or lack of confidence in oneself. Over-learning -- the desire to know more preventing a deeper experience; the addiction to the mental realm can prevent actualization. The mind may never calm down enough to assume its proper role as a servant, not master. Play can eclipse responsibility.

      Paradoxical Solution: The greatest expression of Innocence and Creativity comes from growing up and learning to be a focused, responsible adult. Once this is achieved, one's childlike simplicity and creative nature can be fully realized. The child must grow up, and then it can transcend the adult and return to the awakened child. Discipline and grounded practicality are the soil for the child to be reborn in its true potential.
      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      Cancpricorn: "Responsibility Axis" (Cancer and Capricorn, 4 and 10)
      About: The yearning to support one's society through developing relationships and family, as well as material and public roles and service. The ability to change to be effective in working and getting along with others. Emotional and physical/practical support for others.
      Strengths: Caring, dedication, sensitivity, contribution to the world.
      Weaknesses: Changeability creates a lack of authentic self-expression. Sensitivity creates emotional fortresses, distrust, and fear (separation of true self from others). The emphasis on giving creates a difficulty with receiving. Giving so much can lead one to leave 'strings attached.'
      Paradoxical Solution: One's first and most important responsibility is to nurture oneself. By receiving as much as one is willing to give, one becomes whole, and then one's simple loving presence does more than all that one has ever 'done' before.
      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

      Le Quarius: "Social Awareness Axis" (Leo and Aquarius, 5 and 11)

      About: The flow of creative and charismatic energy into group situations to lead or inspire others and take groups to new levels. The development of the individual self to be able to contribute to the community.

      Strengths: Confidence, uniqueness, genius, and eccentricity. Social Orientation.

      Weakness: Self-aggrandizement, ego, and selfishness. Shifting the importance from the good of all to the excessive importance of oneself. One's rigid opinions, ambition, or self-centeredness gets in the way of humble, compassionate service (true leadership).

      Paradoxical Solution: The best leader strives to be invisible and unworshipped. By giving for the pure enjoyment of giving, rather than for what benefits one may accrue from giving, one's service remains free from egotism and power-seeking. One must identify oneself as all people, then one will not live to compete, gain, and profit for oneself.
      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      Vircses: "Axis of Enlightened Service" (Virgo and Pisces, 6 and 12)
      About: The overcoming of guilt, sadness, fear, and self-criticism through the awakening of compassion for oneself and others, leading to effortless selfless service.
      Strengths: Humility, growth through crisis, discontent which generates action/surrender, and an orientation towards service and wholeness.
      Weaknesses: Neglecting compassion for oneself and not allowing the recognition of one's inherent self-worth. Over-giving or overworking which perpetuates that illusion that there is something wrong with others and oneself (that something needs to be fixed), or preventing one from relaxing and allowing oneself to truly receive love. Being overly consumed with one's problems, sorrow, or growth, perpetuating a cycle of self-absorption.
      Paradoxical Solution: One can do nothing truly deep and transformative for others, until one has followed the disciplined path of achieving the deepest transformation within oneself. Self-love opens up the floodgates of compassion. Only then can one's service for others be absolutely graceful, meaningful, and effective.
    I'm currently studying with Caroline Myss, a profound Teacher, Mystic and Medical Intuitive who pioneered the notion of our individual lives being guided by 12 Archetypal patterns. While a tangent from the Astrolological model (the common element being the natal Zodiac chart and the 12 Houses), much truth can be found in an astrological chart for the personal Archetypes that guide our individual lives.
    For example, if someone has Mars square Chiron, the Mars can represent the Warrior, and yet the Chiron influence wounds it a bit, perhaps creating a Knight or a Hero. On the flip side, if Mars were trine Chiron, perhaps that harmony could propel the soul to be a profound Wounded Healer. The different planets are as Archetypal as the Signs they are found in, and the infinite variables of placements, aspects, houses and astrological dynamics is incredible territory for learning and learning intuitive interpretive skills.
      I like thinking of my sun in Virgo as the "sacred prostitue." It kinda makes me feel better about the times I "gave it up" just because he really seemed to need it, even though it did nothing for me. (But of course, I didn't tell him 'cause it woulda hurt his feelings.)
        I really like *seeing* the Zodiac in polarities/axes ~ i think it adds depth to all the signs to consider their 'opposite'......
        Aries-Libra and 1st-7th House Polarity
        This is a relationship axis, where Aries and the 1st house represent "self" and Libra and the seventh house represent "other". Where Aries-1st house is about self-assertion, Libra-7th is about compromise. People born with planets in both Aries and Libra or both the 1st and 7th need to learn the balance between these two needs.
        Taurus-Scorpio and 2nd-8th House Polarity
        This polarity deals with form (Taurus and the 2nd house) versus transformation (Scorpio and the eighth house). While Taurus-2nd house deals with matter, personal values, material goods, possessions, and security, Scorpio-8th house rules the destruction of form, shared possessions, and change/transformation.
        Gemini-Sagittarius and 3rd-9th House Polarity
        This is a mental axis, where Gemini and the 3rd house represent the "lower mind" and Sagittarius and the 9th house represent the "higher mind". Gemini and the third house rule curiosity and logical thinking. Sagittarius and the ninth house rule a broader way of thinking--the quest for meaning, ideas that expand upon the here and now.
        Cancer-Capricorn and 4th-10th House Polarity
        The private life, domesticity, the need for a home base, and nurturance (Cancer and the 4th house) versus the public life, career, reputation, and accountability (Capricorn and the tenth house). Attachments and love are ruled by Cancer and the 4th, while achievements and rewards/punishments are ruled by Capricorn. In some ways, this polarity deals with the balance between unconditional love and conditional love.
        Leo-Aquarius and 5th-11th House Polarity
        This polarity deals with the balance between the personal (Leo and fifth house) and the impersonal (Aquarius and eleventh house). Leo and the fifth house rule creative self-expression and the boost to the individual ego that we receive through pleasure and romance, while Aquarius and the eleventh house rule the group, more impersonal friendships, and objectivity.
        Virgo-Pisces and 6th-12th House Polarity
        This polarity is the service axis, and it deals with the balance between day-to-day functions and routines, physical health, and the need for order (Virgo and the sixth house) and vision, spiritual health, disorder, and the infinite (Pisces and twelfth house). Virgo and the sixth house rule our tools and techniques that we use to deal with day-to-day life, while Pisces and the twelfth house rule our tools that we use to deal with our spirituality.
          Hey Mem :)
          This list here looks just like the notes I had scribbled down...
          You know I think I liked the ones where they weren't described as much as "polarities", somehow...
          I don't know if it is just because I am "tired of the idea of polarities"...but...
          I think it might be because the list that described the "central idea" sounded more like a ... balance....
          where as this sounds so not balanced....
          I guess the goal of many polarities (I think?) is to find the balance....
          Well...maybe in most situations, anyway....
        deb ~
        I'm a big fan of the "sacred prostitute" archetype also. I think it's often missing/censored/forgotten in the 'mainstream collective consciousness' with the result being mis-directed resources & wasted energy ~ a complete horror for me, with my Pluto in Virgo!
          Hey, Mem!
          Thanks for picking up that I really wasn't "kidding" about that. The idea of the sacred prostitute is endlessly fascinating to me. I love the book The Soul Of Sex, by Thomas Moore. He really explores all of the roles of sex, sexuality, and morality from the anthropological, mythological, psychological, and theological perspective. His emphasis is on healing the gap between the physical, sensual expression of love and sex and the spiritual "isolation" of love, separate from sex through religious and moral impositions of society. It is very deep, probing, and insightful, and never judgmental.
          He also mentions the role of Venus from the archetypal perspective. Really good read. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in this subject.
            I've got that book. It is good.
            "Prostitute" always implies that you're selling something, or trading something. Why not...as the song says, "sexual healing" (sexual healer)?
            Just my two cents worth.
              Hahaha! Okay, Bo. I see what you're trying to suggest, but the sacred prostitute and the sexual healer are really two different roles.
              The sacred prostitute actually resided in the temple of worship, and provided their sexual service to men for an offering of say, a goat, or an article of clothing, or whatever the men had to "trade" for service. They were not stigmatized, but rather exalted in the community as providing a valuable service. Whether or not the men were "healed" is a matter of question. I think they were more likely just "physically relieved." LOL! Anyway,...
              A sexual healer is a highly specialized person, male or female, who is trained in the sacred art of tantra. The sexual experience is highly spiritualized and focused for the purpose of healing the blockages in the chakras.
              I think that a "healing" can happen between two people through the sex act if the two are highly evolved in their own spirituality and can connect on the higher plane during their sexual encounter. This is no "accident," but an evolution of their own ability to channel their energy.
              On an emotional level, I think that sex has an extremely potent contribution to healing the two people involved in the sexual experience. If they truly love each other and are in tune with themselves and each other, then they can touch upon deep wounds and bring about some much needed release through the act of loving each other physically. This is the area where Pluto and the 8th house can help transform lovers emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually through sex.
                  It's hreat to hear of your valuing the Sacred Prostitute, deb. Although I'm a guy, it's an Archetype of particular importance to me, too (with my Virgo Ascendant and Virgo Moon). I've heard a tangent on the Sacred Prostitute of how, like the ancient Virgins, they were the women who would welcome the Warriors home after battle or extended times away from the tribe and help them release the build-up of sexual tensions in order to rejoin the full tribe. That's a pretty powerful role! We've managed to desecrate the Prostitute in our society to fishnet stockings, legs in the air and cash on the nightstand. Oye.
          Re: Zodiac Signs & Archetypes
          Thu, August 2, 2007 - 12:34 AM
          MEM:
          The Archetypes
          The Shadow
          The most basic potential for patterning is the Shadow Archetype. This is the potential of experiencing the unconscious side of our unique personalities. As we move deeper into the dark side of our personality personal, identity begins to dissolve into "latent dispositions" common to all men. We experience the chaos which indicates that we are drawing close to the material structure of psychic life. This "Other Side" may be manifested in a wealth of images. The image of "wilderness" is fundamental. Remember that Hanzel and Gretel were led "into the woods" and were trapped. Knights discover dragons, ogres, and thieves in the woods. Robin Hood is at home in the wild. The image may be that of the mob and its underworld, an urban equivalent in which "Pretty Boy" Floyd is a hero. There is always "the concrete jungle." Dragons sail the sea, "the watery wilderness." Jesus and John the Baptist met God "in the wilderness," as did Israel at Sinai.
          The Shadow is the easiest of the archetypes for most persons to experience. We tend to see it in "others." That is to say, we project our dark side onto others and thus interpret them as "enemies" or as "exotic" presences that fascinate. We see the Shadow everywhere in popular culture. He is Batman. She is Spider Woman. It is the Ninja Turtles. We see it in popular prejudice as well. We "imagine" that the Black Man is our enemy; that Communists are devils. We incline towards Hawaii as the "land of paradise." We accept people uncritically if we perceive them as "Fair Haired." Of course, Satan is the great Shadow image of popular religion (Consider: the word only occurs 54 times in the entire Bible.)
          The Shadow is the personification of that part of human, psychic possibility that we deny in ourselves and project onto others. The goal of personality integration is to integrate the rejected, inferior side of our life into our total experience and to take responsibility for it.
          The Anima Or Animus
          The second most prevalent potential patterning is that of the Soul (Anima is the male name for soul; Animus is the female name for soul). Here we meet our inner opposite. Males meet their Anima; females their Animus. The Anima may appear as an exotic dancing girl or a weathered old hag--the form generally reflects either the condition or the needs of our soul presently. Remember the wicked witch encountered by Hanzel and Gretel. The Animus may appear as an exotic, sensual, young man or as an old grouch. Remember the Great Oz who ran the Emerald City? There is always Simon Legree who took in Little Eva. Consider Super Man and Lois Lane. Clark Kent is the inferior, shadow side of Super Man, but he is also closer to ordinary people. Lois Lane has no interest in Clark. She is infatuated with Super Man, her Animus; the masculine completion of her personality. Wonder Woman offers us an example of the Anima in action.
          The Syzygy (Divine Couple)
          If one comes to terms with the Shadow and the Soul, one will encounter the enchanted castle with its King and Queen. This is a pattern of wholeness and integration. The opposites of the outer and the inner life are now joined in marriage. Great power arises from this integration. Christ and the Church, God and Israel are syzygy images. The believer who aspires to be the "bride of Christ" is modeling his or her experience in response to the syzygy archetype.
          The Child
          The Child Archetype is a pattern related to the hope and promise for new beginnings. It promises that Paradise can be regained. Child images like the New Year's Babe obviously derive from this archetype. So do the golden ring and the golden ball and most flower and circle related images. The birth of the Christ Child who unites Heaven and Earth, Man and God, is a powerful archetypal event. Were the life of Jesus not interpreted by this archetype, it would lose most of its meaning. Jesus would just be one more teacher from the Hellenistic world.
          The Self
          The ultimate pattern is the Self. For Jung this is the God image. Human self and divine self are incapable of distinction. All is Spirit. Images of Spirit abound. Wind and breath being two very common ones. The Spirit descends as a Dove upon Jesus in the wilderness. The voice declares to him his true nature: "Your are my Son, my Beloved." This is an archetypal drama of the Self. Galahad achieving the Grail and ascending with it to Heaven is likewise an archetypal drama of Self. Lancelot's failure to achieve the Grail speaks of his failure to achieve the final discovery of Self. Chariots and cars point in this direction. Remember the death car which comes in Darby O'Gill and the Little People? Enoch is taken up in a chariot of fire. Ezekiel Chapter One describes the chariot conveying God into the world.
            I especially liked the syzygy comment about the "bride of Christ" ~ you know that I have 'memories' of a past life where I was a nun, living in a convent & nuns are known as the "brides of Christ" ~ adding that to the Shadow archetype ~ pretty much brings me up to date with my current, Western, dark Scorpionic personality.
            as Socrates used to say, that "I know nothing", meaning "I known nothing for certain, in the strongest sense of these words, nothing, that is, of what alone counts to reach happiness in life"), but constitutes an idea(l) of justice, of a justice that is not merely abiding by the laws, but which is the inner harmony to be reached by a human being whose will is torn apart between passions and reason and whose unity is not given from the start, as the foundation for social harmony between men and women in the city.
        It makes me think of my vesta in pisces a little wee bit....
        But that may be more like a "temple prostitute" rather than a "sacred prostitute".....different? similar?
        Hmmm...or maybe that would actually be "sacred virgin"
        Why does that not seem totally different to me?
        Could it be because in a way....both senses are holding sexuality as sacred in some way?
        • Re: Zodiac Signs & Archetypes
          Thu, August 2, 2007 - 9:57 AM
          Erin ~
          Vesta is associated with the Vestal Virgins ~ who were actually "sacred virgins" {although 'virgin' originally just meant a person who wasn't promised in marriage, rather than someone who hasn't expereinced sexual intercourse ~ the emphasis went from mind (air) to physical (earth)}
          The Vestal Virgins were the priestesses of Vesta in charge of maintaining the sacred fire within the Temple of Vesta on the Forum Romanum. They were the only female priests within the roman religious system.
          The vestal virgins were selected from distinguished patrician families at an age from three to ten. A vestal virgin served thirty years. The first ten years as novices, then ten years as vestal virgins proper, and at last ten years as supervisors. After the thirty years of duty they were free, also to marry. Marrying a former vestal virgin was highly prestigious.
          The vestals vowed to live in chastity for the thirty years their tenure lasted. As compensation they had many privileges not given to ordinary Roman women. The vestals were not subject to the pater potestas of their father, they could handle their own property and write a legally binding testament, they had special seats in the front row at the games where women normally were relegated to the back seats and they were allowed to move around in the city in a carriage. Their persons were inviolable and sacred and their blood could not be spilt. If a person sentenced to death, met a vestal virgin on his way to the execution, he was automatically pardoned.
          The punishment for breaking the vow of chastity was death by burial alive—the only way to kill a vestal without shedding her blood—in a place known as the "Evil Fields", or Campus Sceleratus, just outside the Servian Wall. Their lover would be flogged to death on the Comitium. The execution of one or more vestal virgins were carried out several times, but very infrequently.
          The order of the vestals was disbanded in 394 CE, when non-Christian cults were banned.
    About Vesta archetype
    **********************************************************************************************************
    I am not still very familiar with all astrological nuances, but I though that it would help to share some ideas about mythological aspects of Vesta and stretch myself a little...
    Hestia (for greeks)/ Vesta (for Romans)
    I must say that for greeks Hestia was one of the most important godesses. Reading through what MEM wrote, you can assume the importance that this goddess had in these ancient cultures. There are not many stories about her (those stories that mythology lovers like to read about), because she had a very quiet way and she liked to stay at home. She though that Aphrodite/ Venus could deal with love and that Artemis/Diana and Athena/Minerva (other virgin godesses) could also have power or adventure. She felt that becoming a virgin it was a choice of her and not someone's choice. She was loving and trustable. She was also peaceful and not fond of wars and disputes, because she accepted her destiny by being what it was: a personal choice made by freewill based in what she belevied to be her truth :-)
    The cult of Hestia was fundamental in the house or in the temple for daily life (we can see how its relates to virgo archetype).
    As archetype presence in a woman personality, Hestia can give her a feeling of integrity. She possesses an inner focused conscience, that can enable us to get in touch with our own values and principles, bringing into focus what is reallly important - our inner truth.
    Being a Fireplace goddess, Hestia is a living archetype of women that feel that taking care of the house is a significant task. Hestia taking care of the details of domestic activities can be see in a similar way to meditation. It is all about doing this driven by love and never by obligation - acceptance.
    *****************************************************
    You can see now why astrology relates Vesta (Hestia) with devotion (devoted servant that has the important task of looking after daily routines, taking care of the house) - much similar to virgo sign. And you can also see the house with our inner temple... like our soul.. where you go in the end of a day.... to sleep and recharge batteries....
    Anyway, just some scattered thoughts
    Erin,
    can you see your Pisces Vesta now? ;-D
      Not quite the same as the sacred prostitute...but another type of sacredness (only partly involving sexuality)
        Yeah, I can see Vesta active in my life when pondering these posts. Thank you everyone so much for posting them! I've never really known what Vesta respresented in my chart in a practical light. This information really helps to synthesize the placement for me.
        My insistence on autonomy, while serving out of love, not obligation, servitude, or coerciion is a very big deal to me! I take great pride in helping others and I do it from my heart. It is very satisfying to me to know that others appreciate and welcome my assistance, and that what I've done has truly helped to ease their burden or cleared their mind or path in some way.
        Sun in Virgo, Pluto in Virgo, (both in the 8th).
        Vesta in Leo in the 7th in a tight sextile to Mercury, (ruler of Virgo), in Libra in the 9th
        Integrity, honesty, and fairness is also a big deal to me. (Mercury in the 9th in Libra) I need to be respected, (Vesta in Leo in the 7th), and I always give respect and act respectibly so as to warrant the respect of others. I believe that respect should be earned not expected.
        I'm also quite content to be as unobtrusive to others as is humanly possible, and demand the same consideration, (sun and Pluto in the 8th in Virgo). I love intimacy, but am highly selective as to whom I share this "sacred" space.
    Some Christian iconography:
    Aries: Peter, the fiery, impulsive, changeable, pioneering leader, who eventually became the rock upon which was founded the New Church "of the Lamb." (Cardinal: inspirational)
    Taurus: Simon Zelotes, the dogmatic, determined zealot; who was concerned with property and finances, rebelled against the payment of taxes, and received from Jesus the admonition - "Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's." (Fixed: materialistic)
    Gemini: James, "the lesser." Slow to accept the authenticity of the Messiah, but became the eloquent preacher of the church in Jerusalem, and an active evangelist and exhorter. (Mutable: intellectual)
    Cancer: Andrew, the sympathetic homebody, a follower of John the Baptist, whose first thought when he discovered the Messiah was to run quickly and fetch his brother Simon. (Cardinal: sympathetic)
    Leo: John, the most beloved apostle. (Fixed: inspirational)
    Virgo: Philip, always precise, calculating, enquiring, and practical. (Mutable: materialistic)
    Libra: Bartholomew-Nathaniel, the innocently pure one "in whom there is no guile." The tactful, persuasive evangelist. (Initiating: intellectual)
    Scorpio: Thomas, the doubting skeptic, yet bold and courageous. (Fixed: sympathetic)
    Sagittarius: James, the great teacher, who with Peter and John became the spiritual leaders of the early church: the three fire sign types cooperating. (Mutable: inspirational)
    Capricorn: Matthew, the tax gatherer, the politician, the one in authority in the governing seat in Rome. (Cardinal: materialistic)
    Aquarius: Thaddeus-Jude, who considered the lot of the peasant, and sought to better the living and working conditions of the masses; and who interrogated Jesus at the Last Supper as to how he would manifest himself. (Fixed: intellectual)
    Pisces: Judas Iscariot, who when he succumbed to temptation suffered severe pangs of remorse. (Mutable: sympathetic)
    In the Book of Revelation 4:7 it reads, "And the first animal was like a lion (symbol of Leo), and the second animal was like a bull (symbol of Taurus), and the third animal had a face of a man (symbol of Aquarius, the water bearing man), and the fourth animal was like a flying eagle (ancient symbol of Scorpio)"
    I like that Jude Thaddeus.
    Peace, Bo
