Collecting in relation to astrology...

Hi, all. I am doing some thinking about/research into the impulse to collect and how it might connect to astrology, and was wondering if anyone has some thoughts on the matter or would find this an interesting subject for discussion.

I have been primarily examining the collecting impulse in connection with Taurus/the 2nd House/Venus, so far - as the collecting of material objects, largely stemming from the need for security. This seems the obvious place to examine collecting, though I'm sure all the signs can connect in some way, as well. I can see Gemini as a collector of more immaterial things - information, experience, etc. - stemming from the desire to perceive as much as possible. I can see Sagittarius, as well, as an experience collector, but more of a focused one (on specific beliefs/cultures/so on). And I think Virgo could tie in nicely to the organization/analyzation of collected materials and ideas (as what is done with a collection [organization/usage/display...] is an important part of the collecting process). I'm also curious about Scorpio's connection to collecting, being the opposite of Taurus. It must tie into the shared resources side of Scorpio, though I don't see Scorpio as being entirely about sharing/merging when it comes to those matters (as it is a fixed sign and does retain).

Aaanyhow, those are just some of my initial thoughts, and I'd be very curious about anyone else's! Thanks.

I used to enjoy collecting when I was a kid. Probably it is something I have outgrown to some degree, though I still like getting hold of science-fiction classics or horror classis if I can. Perhaps that has also something to do with the fact that such things could seem a little sad, though I would not lie and go on about loving tennis and all kinds of socially-orientated sports either.

I used to collect seashells along with one or two other things and I would say the collecting bug was inherited, my mother did too. Last time I saw her, she wanted to know if I would like her seashell collection once sheis dead and gone. She also collected small/ceramic cats at one time. My father used to collect bird's eggs, probalby a hobby that would be frowned on a lot these days and tends to be a hoarder, never throwing out old photographs, books or cuttings, that kind of thing.

Blame it on Mercury-Saturn exchanges, my father has a sqaure, my mother has a conjunction between these two and so do I. Maybe it is more a Virgoan thing than a Taurean one, or maybe not, though my Midheaven at 29 Libra could have gone into Libra, but my mother has Virgo rising. M brother is the only one who does not seem to collect much and he has no Mercury-Saturn aspects at all.

I'm trying to look into Mercury-Saturn aspects in relation to collecting, now. Thanks for going into so much detail about you and your family members' collecting habits! That's all very informative. Man, I am still wondering over that Mercury-Saturn thing. It wouldn't have struck me, initially, as something that might lead to a collecting habit, but I'm going to be thinking about it, because it certainly could tie in! Actually, I have a Mercury-Saturn trine and I'm quite the hoarder (of the never throwing things away sort, like your dad).

I'm Gemini with Sag rising and I do collect information, much of it in books and computer files, I also collect rocks and crystals

My Husband is Aquarius and I have not been able to find his birth time so I have no rising But He is a collector of so many different things we say he collects collections . I have known several different Aquarius who were extraordinary collectors
My spouse collects coins, Military miniatures, romance novels, history books . military history books, board games , Movie and Tv DVDs
( and several thousand vcr tapes ) Olympic pins and Law enforcement pins, lps and much more . Not counting cats, birds and strays in general ). He also encourages every one else to collect , so my Virgo kids have assorted collections too . Once upon a time my oldest child ( at about age 7) had a huge mess of candy wrappers on her floor Mike was scolding her to pick up the floor, and she looked up and said " but its my collection " he said O.K. and left the room.

Other Aquarius Collectors I've known included a Social Science Professor with several houses full of fine art and sculpture , An artist who not only had thousands of paintings he had false walls around his entire apartment to conceal several years supply of canned foods . I knew an Aquarius in San Bruno California who opened a store for rare records mostly as an excuse to amass record albums and rock and roll memorabilia
Another thing about some of these Aquarii? is that not only do they collect, they let go, The Professor in Sacramento just walked away from all the stuff, invited friends to help themselves and moved to Kenya where I'm told he has begun a new collection. My spouse lost his waltz trophies and an number of other treasures in the Loma Prieta Earthquake and was completely cool with it

Any way in my experience the really intense collectors are often Aquarius types.

Aquarius, huh? That's one sign I hadn't yet considered much in relation to collecting. That's really fascinating that you've known so many Aquarius Sun folks who are such avid collectors. I wonder what might be the Aquarian pull towards it, as I'm sure it's different than the Taurean appreciation of physical items and desire for security through them. Being able to part with collected items/possessions in general is not something I feel very comfortable with, unlike them - and I might just go ahead and blame that on all the Taurus in me. I like familiar, material things around me in order to feel comfortable (though the occasional thrill of entirely foreign surroundings and strangers is great, too... but... occasional is the key word).

Do you, by any chance, know your husband's Moon sign or much else about his chart (besides his Rising sign/Houses, since that info's not available)?

According to astrobot My Super Collector Aquarius spouse has
        Sun 10 Degrees Aquarius.
        Moon 11 Degrees Capricorn.
        Mercury 02 Degrees Aquarius.
Venus is in 09 Degrees Aquarius.
Mars is in 17 Degrees Cancer.
Jupiter is in 27 Degrees Libra.
Saturn is in 19 Degrees Cancer.
Uranus is in 13 Degrees Gemini
Neptune is in 08 Degrees Libra.
Pluto is in 10 Degrees Leo.
        N. Node is in 29 Degrees Gemini.
Again we don't have a rising . we think he was probably born in the very early morning but do not know for however that might effect accuracy of this

          What abpout hoarding then?

I knew someone like this once, where you could not move inside his house. Every room was strwn with clutter, books, everything, in some boxes therwe were also (eww) maggots from various leftovers.

The reason I ask about this is that there was once a TV programme, a kind of reality show I suppose, that featured individuals whose clutter had taken over their homes. The task of the TV presenters was to help these individuals desist from being 'pack rats' and get rid of it all - obviously there was drama where these individuals resisted, but there was always tha happy endings where these folks did eventually mange to squeeze themselves into tastefully renovaterd, decluttered homes.

Often here were emotional problems of some kind involved - some were shopaholics, ohers had lost someone, inherited a house that was already full of clutter, that kind of a thing.

So has anyone ever had any experience with someone who compulsively hoards? or been one and can relate it so anything in their charts?

i think material objects can be symbols for different things. i have known aquarius's who collect things as well. things that are subtle, rare objects that we may not notice as having value in the status quo.
cancer i can see collecting objects which symbolize communal societies like dutch, russian folk art materials, quilts.

i think looking at the modality could also help with this.
i dont know if this relates but if you're talking about sharing, I've known a lot of scorpio and aquarius's who love to share wisdom and advice and things but seem really stubborn when those things come back to them because they dont want to be changed.

I don't really collect anything.... I hate cluter.... and they say Cancers are pack rats....Venus in Taurus in the 9th house, Libra 2nd house....

Everything I seem to own... is nice quality...All the bills are paid... I seem to be always ahead of the collectors! Don't seem to have debts... cause I pay off everything I own right away.

Maybe it is because Libra is the sign of personal detachment.....

I think clutter is just one side of collecting, though. Selective, orderly collecting of nice objects of a certain kind, for example, could certainly be collecting, even though it makes your place look tidy and attractive and tastefully decorated. I could see Venus in Taurus possibly being expressed this way, but especially a Libra 2nd House (not to say that you necessarily DO collect anything - even in a selective/tasteful/tidy manner). The 2nd House could be a place of acquiring material things and what you value, and Libra there would probably want aesthetic balance, harmony, and beauty. This would probably lend itself to a fairly 'tasteful' sort of acquiring.

Gemini is on my 2nd House cusp and I am a mess. I hoard like nobody's business, and I hoard EVERYTHING, because I find it all potentially useful or interesting. It is a very unorganized sort of collecting, and I don't display it in a 'nice' manner, but pile it in a mess. This is actually less of a thought-through collection process, and more of a messy accumulation process, than someone who, for example, collects fancy vases and organizes them on display on their mantel.

        Just some thoughts!

I delved into collecting a little in the comic book area and novels. I was pretty much, a "stuff guy". Part of traveling details was, where to store things? One day I got sick of this energy. I now save nothing unless it has immediate value. If I have three or four items that are the same, little used, cooking utinsel, for example, I trash everything but what I can use. I like attics, but only for getting fresh air.

The act of collecting....wow I was obsessed with archiving for awhile. Art history student, creating files of graduate school researches, cataloguing art works, magazine articles, etc, and then writing about artists who collect and catalogue as art.

to me it's very VIRGO, ordering cataloging.....
I have 2nd house Virgo and a Gemini NNode
Info maniac and I tend to quest to know things just to know

I still toy with the idea of being a librarian

        My ex-
her house is crammed w/ crap, she gets very nuts, when you try to perge her.
Taurus Asc, Cancer moon 2nd, Gem Mars 1st, Saturn 8th, Aries Venus and Merc 12th..
Pisces Sun 11th. She has a spash chart. no conj.
There are farious Aspect all over, I could relate to this..
One of the main reasons we didn't work. I just can't live were my eyes are attacked by so much stuff. Drives me nuts. I grew up w/ minimal posesions. I need order and space were I live.
I even tend to make 1 wall of my place empty, and find myself drawn to looking that way for sanity breaks..

I definitely can see all that Mercury lending itself to collecting/archiving/analyzing/ordering/cataloging, as you said! Mercury is such a different sort of collecting than Venus collecting. it's interesting that you have yours combined, with the 2nd House Virgo placement...

I agree with kt...Virgo as the collector. those anal-retentive tendencies we all have (everybody has Virgo somewhere) for ordering the chaos of our lives can lead to collecting. Taurus (and 2nd House emphasis) can also manifest the pack rat behavior of clinging to things long after their use is exhausted.

The only thing I tend to collect and never get rid of are emails and cards??

Every year I clear out my closet and donate to Good Will
I am quick to give away things I have to others in general
    I don't collect anything
Even when I played collectible card games like MTG or Pokemon, I didn't collect them at all. I just played the game and am still happy to just dig through somone's "unwanted cards" and make a deck to beat them with :P

I have taurus intercepted in H12
    chiron in taurus

I think the emails/letters thing is probably due to the 2nd house moon. I literally horde these.

gemini mercury and sun, aries moon. i have saturn and mars in libra 2nd house and venus in taurus in 9th

the only thing i collect are books (cant stop on this one). abit music scores and instruments. i don't 'collect' per say. but i tend to keep things and not throw them. until recently, i have given in to the act of purging and started with leeching friends and then cleared out my room. i still have alot of things in my room but all orderly. ok i mean, it gets messy but i will pack it all up once i cant stand the clutter.

i am a book addict, i also save letters & cards (if something is written in them) from family & friends. i also collect elephants, which i usually purchase when i am traveling & have quite a few musical instruments.

the instruments are kind of funny since i only play the piano. but i think it's cause i love throwing dinner parties & most of my friends can plaly some instrument & after dinner thats where the evening ends up. Besides that i dislike clutter and give a lot of things away. At the end of every season you can see me making a drop-off at the red cross box.

not sure what the astrological connection is maybe books & letters has something to do with sag 3H ruler & gemini 9H ruler are placed in my 4H & i don't know neptune in 3H with regard to musical instruments. i definitely think libra asc & venus conjunct ic has to do with having dinner parties at home. food, friends, conversation, music what else is needed :)

      peace,
      natty

        Hehe

        Another Aqua Collector here...

        6th house sun saturn mars.
Virgo rising, uranus r and pluto r in the 1st house.
        Mercury in 5th house Capricorn.

I like to collect things that are useful to me, a guest may not notice an item as part of a collection, but I do. For example, I love nice wood chairs. And nice, decorative boxes, any size, made of wood, paper, glass. I use them to store other items. I like metalware too, I have a small collection of various galvanized buckets that I use in the garden, for planters etc. And I love wrought iron stuff. I really enjoy nice quality bed linens, and change them and mix and match.
My son has graced me with a collection of heart shaped rocks, and they got wax all over them when a forgotten candle burned too low. I was so bummed, those are the most meaningful of collections.
Oh! I like to collect fortunes from cookies too ! I keep them in a ceramic bank my son gave me.
Some collections I have walked away from, not too easily, but if they no longer serve me, I don't want the clutter. I recently let go of a few oil lamps, except special ones, like one that was my great grandmothers. And I had a few too many quilts, so I sold them...
I have a collection of costume jewelry that my Grandmother amassed, I don't quite know what to do with that, but I am sentimental about stuff too. I like old stuff ,that has a spirit, like the stories it tells, if you listen. I like cool old houses too, for that reason.

Which brings to mind this classic bit...enjoy!

My grandfather has the most severe form of collecting-mania I've ever seen,or heard of...he's been collecting stamps since before WW2,and continues to do so,just as avidly, now,at the age of 84.He also had huge collections of coins, postcards, medals, and badges. But he's "closed" those years before...he just keeps all the items,as memories, now.
Unfortunately,I don't know he's exact time of birth, but I do know he has his Sun,Mercury,Venus, and Saturn in Libra, with Sun conjunct Mercury,Sun conjunct Venus, and Mercury conjunct Venus. He also has a Taurus Moon, which forms a trine with his Virgo Mars,if that says anything to you...
