hey guys,
So someone tipped me off to check on astro.com for current transits against my natal chart positions and it turns out Saturn's getting pretty close to it's placement in my birth chart. so, I guess i'm experiencing my Saturn return! Thing is, I didn't really feel too much diff from when Saturn was in Leo this summer. One thing I do feel tho, is a wierd need to "work" on things, to fix relationships, to get in better shape, to get more money in the bank, blah blah.
I think part of the problem is that I don't really know much about Saturn besides "the great teacher" info I found online. So I was wondering, what are some of your ideas on Saturn? I know it's a hugely significant planet so there must be so much that can be said about it and I'd love to hear what some of you guys think or have read or been told about Saturn's incredible power. Also, if anyone is going through their Saturn Return or remembers when they went through theirs--what was it like? How did things change and how did you recognize Saturn working it's magic in your life?

Re: planetary discussion: Saturn
Mon, October 8, 2007 - 10:16 PMderrick,
i actually had a really good experience with my saturn return. i got a great job (i could see central park from my desk :)), met a lot of new people, & moved to NYC. I was a little nervous initially always hearing not so happy stories. my natal saturn/gemini/9H is pretty well aspected: sextile moon, trine chiron, trine asc... but was nervous cause i have mars opposing saturn. I have a couple of natal planets & north node in Capricorn & 4H capricorn mercury in mutual reception with 9H gemini Saturn; so saturn is a strong influence in my life. i think it is really important to look at aspects that transiting planets are forming. & i had tons of stuff happening in my chart during my saturn return.
when transiting saturn started to conjunct my natal saturn I decided to get a better job. At that time natal Saturn/Gemini/9H was conjunct transiting north node & opposite a transiting Pluto natal mars conjunction in sag/3H. I also had transiting Jupiter conjunct my cancer midheaven.
the day i was hired transiting sun & moon were conjunct in cancer 10H & opposite natal north node. At this time transiting jupiter & mars were conjunct in cancer 10H & opposite my natal mercury, jupiter, & sun cap 4H conjunction.
saturn return in 9H (higher education) could be that all those years in college paid off. i think my new job had a lot to do with jupiter & mars transiting my cancer 10H. i am not sure how the oppositions played out in my favor; especially the sun & moon opposition to natal north node. but I think the transiting Jupiter/mars 10H conjunction opposite natal sun/mercury/jupiter 4H conjunction definitely had to do with moving for career reasons. Not clear on how mutual receptions work, but I am sure there is something of importance here with my Saturn/mercury mutual reception.

Re: planetary discussion: Saturn
Mon, October 8, 2007 - 10:25 PMGreat topic! My Saturn return happened a little over four years ago. Since my natal Saturn is in my 12th, I didn't notice a huge change in outward circumstances until it moved over my Ascendant about a year and a half later. But I sure felt it...in part because it was also moving into square with my natal Sun.
A lot of circumstances fell apart in my life, and for the better; I've worked harder since than I ever knew possible! I feel like these last three years has been a time of testing and retesting my personal goals and boundaries. It hasn't always been pleasant at all (and this is an understatement) but the feeling of accomplishment I'm getting is incredible. This new sense of accomplishment is not fun or enjoyable, exactly, but it's...solid. I feel like I have a real identity now, one that I'm earning, in place of the "younger" identities that I inherited, tried on, or flirted with.
In short, facing a Saturn return is tough as hell, but the rewards are uniquely satisfying. Hang in there! -

Tue, October 9, 2007 - 7:20 PMthanks for the advice guys! sounds like Saturn's been real exciting for you. Question tho: where (what site) do you go to find your current transits in regards to your natal placements? -

Re: planetary discussion: Saturn
Tue, October 9, 2007 - 8:12 PMastro.com is the one I use...just go to "Free Horoscopes" then "Extended Chart Selection" and you'll find a heading for natal chart plus transits. Pretty cool...

Re: planetary discussion: Saturn
Tue, October 9, 2007 - 8:15 PMAstro.com..
"Extended chart selection"
in "chart type"? something like that. it's at the top, you'll find a bunch of chart types.
Sanastry, midpoint ect. Use "Natal chart w/ transits"
the transiting planets will be outside the circle.
Then you can also Use todays date for an entry, and do a Sanastry chart w/ you, and today, then the aspects of the transits to natal show up...
have fun.. -

Re: planetary discussion: Saturn
Tue, October 9, 2007 - 8:37 PMsaturn is all about getting grounded in the material plane
how you have been faring in this area of your life ? if you have been taking care of business, then the return itself can be relatively uneventful. if not, then the saturn return will be a time of coming to terms with the practical side of life.
i think too, if your natal saturn is well placed and not in any difficult aspects to other planets in the chart, the return will be easier......simply b/c it won't trigger any natal complexes.

that's a great description of what one's first saturn return is about:
the transition from "inherited self" to "earned self" -

Re: planetary discussion: Saturn
Wed, October 10, 2007 - 8:19 PMKali,
The last thing I've been so far in my life, is practical. :-)
So I think this is the crash and burn. And I think it's only starting, so we'll see where it goes. As you said (someone else mentioned it to me on another tribe) my natal Saturn isn't placed too roughly aspect-wise so perhaps my SR won't be as terrifying and fear-inspiring as I've heard others have been. Altho, I do wonder if having Saturn so close to my IC might mean something? Some shake-up in terms of the IC's significance on both H3's characteristic qualities and H4's. As I said, lately I've been all about "slowing down and setting up shop." and simplifying things, breaking the big picture down into little parts of it in order to analyze the whole.
Being that I haven't had much Saturn in my life until lately, I am just wondering what Saturn means to people--I mean other than the myriad websites I've read off Google so far. -

Fri, October 12, 2007 - 7:21 AMDerrick,
If you are starting to try to think about where that saturn return could point to...I would check out what house it is going to commence in as well as any close aspects it may make to planets and angles...
Or just let it happen and wait and see :)
Because there are likely to be some unexpected surprises either way :)

Re: planetary discussion: Saturn
Fri, October 12, 2007 - 8:58 AMMy saturn return has been a weeding out of what doesn't work in my life. Or as some may say what has kept me from god...the universe, etc. It has been painful and hard but in the end I think it has saved my life and given me the chance to start again. Saturn is he who is faithful even in darkness. There is no proof that things will work out and faith is really not based on the tangible but for only so long can we rely on old crutches before they begin to threaten the life force or take away any gifts we may have. My saturn return has taught me that believing in and trusting in the universe is my best option for survival. I used to be very cycnical and feel like life was pretty meaningless and that nothing I had to share creatively was worthy or special (my saturn is in leo) now I am finding that if I want to keep living it is my job in life to share my talents and to believe in the greater good and act upon that belief. -

Re: planetary discussion: Saturn
Fri, October 12, 2007 - 5:07 PMMine was in 1990 & it was perfectly awful, but then I have saturn square my sun in my natal chart. I went back to new england to try and resolve issues with some people and it didn't work. There was hardly any work to be found, and what I had thought would be a 6 month trip ended up taking 2 years before I could return to california. Very hard time for me. Working very hard, absolutely broke, depressed and dealing with difficult people. One good thing it did for me was to make me realise that some things really are NOT my problem and I don't need to take them on or fix them for people. I don't need to take responsibility for problems which others scapegoat onto me. They do. It clarified what was my responsibility and what was not.
The worst though was when T saturn directly squared my natal sun. I remember sitting in a cold dark room watching CNN's footage of the gulf war, far far away from my friends, surrounded by gung ho rednecks and feeling absolutely hopeless and overwelmed... I beleive it was sleeting a lot right around that time too.
Saturn is now trine both my sun and moon, and although things are somewhat easier in the "saturn realm" I can't say it has bestowed any earthshakingly positive things. I think it's just made my attitude towards limitations better. BUT, maybe that's the key... probley is.
I think any hard transit between saturn and neptune is much worse than a saturn return though. And I have a well aspected neptune... -

Well, I'm sure you've already read things like this, but;
Solidity; materials and materialism, physical manifestation. Anything concrete in both senses of the word.
Conventionality/dogma, religious or philosophical manifestations of form valued over spirit. Beaurocracy. Status symbols.
Supporting structures, foundations, bones and skeletons
Hard work, oppression, farming. Response-ability.
Practicality or Machavellian (sp?) practices, pragmatism.
Practices or ordinances- as in the *form* a system takes. Rules on *How* it is expected to be done. What & how a system defines the authority- the structured process. &... the person who is that sort of authority.
& in some contexts for some people; Satan. The structure of the Catholic church. Public policies on public schools. Prisons. The "powers that be".

Re: planetary discussion: Saturn
Fri, October 12, 2007 - 6:46 PMi'm at the tail end of my saturn return, and honestly, i still don't get it. for me it almost seems the opposite of what i would expect. every time i make practical efforts to stabilize my life, the ground crumbles beneath me. i could ride through the summers on a wing and a prayer and everything would work fine. but as soon as i tried to become practical and stable in order to move toward goals, everything would fall apart. saturn doesn't seem to like me having a job and security. some say saturn return is like a test. i haven't seen the results yet, but i'm afraid that i've failed miserably. saturn was certainly never my strongest subject. -

Re: planetary discussion: Saturn
Fri, October 12, 2007 - 7:34 PMBut all in all, i guess saturn's return has pushed my resourcefulness (Scorpio MC?). This post just inspired me to do some more research on the Leo/Virgo cusp (my Saturn's at 29 Leo), and thing's are making a little more sense. My life seemed to work out fine while I was very focused on helping others. It was when I tried to focus on my own goals that things fell apart. Saturn moving into Virgo, the "sign of service", i guess. And being in the 7th house, I suppose it has alot to do with that 1st/7th axis (self/others). Alot of my Saturn return was spent completely impractically... avoiding real jobs and spending most of my time volunteering at an art gallery. As long as I was doing that everything seemed to be taken care of for me. I didn't need money and i lived like a king. If i was hungry, there was food. If I wanted a beer, there was always one around. I had a place to sleep and shower without ever paying a penny in rent. But as soon as I started to focus on making money and moving toward my own goals everything went to hell. hmmm... so maybe i'm not so dumb after all.
"Saturn at the last degree of Leo brings the fall of someone in power and monetary devaluations." I found that on a google search... "monetary devaluations"... interesting.

one thing that came to my mind from what you wrote is...just what should you look to as your "rock of stability"
maybe it isn't a job or an income at all...but maybe it is just precisely that prayer that you referred to before.
there are times when prayer will get you much farther than a couple bucks ... i think a large percentage of the world's population relies more on prayer and family than we could imagine.
the concept of a person stablizing themselves with an independent income is kind of a novelty from my understanding of things...
**************************************************************************************************************
and my saturn return is just starting it's first phase really...
all I can say is yep...letting go of my Dad...
and this: the simplicity of life-maybe that's saturn-maybe it's something else entirely!-but remember saturn is together with venus just now so it kinda fits doesn't it .... appreatiating the simple pleasures-being in the here-and-now and loving it .... being happy enough with just today instead of also tomorrow and yesterday :) -

Re: planetary discussion: Saturn
Fri, October 12, 2007 - 8:37 PMexio, i'm with Pi on this one. perhaps your saturn return is more about what you don't think it is than what you'd want it to be? everyone says it's about practicality and all that but maybe "The Teacher" is telling you something else? Maybe the fact that you can't see what saturn is telling you? That you don't see the picture clearly? just throwing ideas out there...
and part of the reason i say that is because i don't think i did and perhaps that's what saturn is telling me as i approach mine. Pi, my saturn is in H3 which is, as you know, communications. the funny thing for me is, i've got Merc in H10 Aries but most of my life until the past 8 or so years was spent in lack of communication. i was painfully shy and very self conscious. i didn't speak nearly at all in HS for pete's sake. lately, i've been all about communicating. not just verbally, but i'm finding my emails are long-winded. i've started writing short stories and whatnot again (which I all but abandoned out of lack of self-confidence over 10 years ago). point is, eventho my SR hasn't even started yet i think the lesson is that, for me anyways, you never really knew yourself totally, even if you think you did.
Pi, my SR hasn't even started and already I'm all about reading anything and everthing i can about the things that interest me that i avoided up until now, about taking short trips, about sharing myself with others...
my saturn isn't too aspected, as you can see from my chart in my profile. so we'll see how this all turns out i guess. thanks you guys for sharing your stories and takes on saturn! this is so interesting learning about saturn's awesome powers! -

Re: planetary discussion: Saturn
Fri, October 12, 2007 - 8:47 PMsounds like practicality may = collaboration in your case . . . doing what you do best without any illusions of autonomy and choosing and maintaining partnerships with care.
in any event, give the effects of a saturn return a couple of years to kick (or settle) in. -

Re: planetary discussion: Saturn
Thu, July 17, 2008 - 8:26 AMI am old enough to have experienced two Saturn returns. At its most basic, Saturn represents time and maturity. Back in the 60s the chant was "Never trust anyone over 30." The reason is, anyone over 30 had experienced a Saturn return and was thus more focused on maturing and life goals.
A Saturn return is exact when transiting Saturn forms a conjunction with your natal Saturn. However, the return period goes on for about 2.5 years. During that time, people almost always make some kind of major change: they marry, divorce, have a child, get a new job, lose an old job, move to a new location, take on an unusually significant responsibility. What most don't realize is that during the Saturn return period, you are setting things in motion that will have a long-term impact on your life. You will see that the things you want usually require the Saturnian attributes such as discipline, duty, responsibility, growing up.
At my first Saturn return, I left Memphis, Tenn., where I was born and moved to Boston to take a job with a company that I had also worked for in Memphis. I thought that when you left the city limits of Memphis you just fell off the edge of the earth. I quit the job, moved back to Memphis, then left Memphis again to take a job that moved me back to Boston (which I adored). During the second time in Boston, I began studying astrology. I moved back to Memphis yet again, then moved to Florida, and I've never lived in Memphis since then.
What is interesting is to note the things you start under your first Saturn return. My study of astrology in Boston was the beginning of my passion for the subject.
Now when I had my SECOND Saturn return, I had to retire from the job that I loved. (Saturn return wasn't the only thing going on then. I had the prog. Sun conj natal Pluto, transiting Pluto opposing Saturn, an eclipse on my Sun/Uranus conjunction, and transiting Uranus opposing the natal Moon and squaring the natal Venus.) It was from that experience that I began doing astrology full time. I've never been happier.
I see the connections between the first Saturn return--when I started studying astrology--to the second Saturn return, when I started putting 33 years of study into practice. That's why I would advise everyone going through their first Saturn return to keep a journal. You'll refer to it often--remember, after the Saturn return, you will also have a Saturn square Saturn 7 years later, then Saturn opposing Saturn 14 years later, etc. etc. and tracking the themes that seem to dominate during those times will be very useful for you.
As a matter of fact, for your first Saturn return, look back on your life and figure out what was going on when you were about age 7 (first square of transiting Saturn to natal Saturn), about age 14 (Saturn opposing natal Saturn), and 21 (Saturn squaring natal Saturn). Even without a knowledge of astrology, those years have significant maturing effects connected with them. The age of 7 is considered "the age of reason," 14 is the onset of adolesence, and 21 is a legitimate age for a lot of things. This is what I mean about Saturn ruling time.
Hope that helps.

Re: planetary discussion: Saturn
Thu, July 17, 2008 - 9:29 AMI've not yet met my Saturn return, but I did want to share an experience with the planet crossing over my MC.
Prior to this, work was just something I did, and floated through just to get a paycheck. In some ways, this is the same, but over the last few months, I've been taking on such work, becoming very thorough, really embracing my role in the organization and improving my attitude to boot.
I was afraid of the crossover for a while, expecting some huge catastrophe to occur, but I forgot the main thing about saturn: it's slow. Things don't just randomly fall apart on you with this, but it sloooooowly brings you to the place where the transit has effect. So now I'm taking on more responsibility and taking great pride in my work. -

Re: planetary discussion: Saturn
Fri, July 18, 2008 - 3:52 PMSo may be i'm not a good one:)
my Saturn return started last year and compleated some monthes ago (I have 10th house natal Saturn) right now from about a month it is over my nat. Venus (10th house too). And if i have to be correct nothing such as great career opportunity didn't happen. But one of my theachers died during this period and he had a significat role in my professiona life. I have troubles with my workplace (persisting ones). My encome is not secure becouse of the workplace problems. And a part of my love-life is in a bad condition.
ones said the Saturn is the rightchasness and the fair play if it is so i have to reconsider my life (wich i'm doing because of the troubles)
