Some astrologers use the 'old' rulerships, some mix the old and new.
Generally even if something is in 29th or 0th degree, it is ruled by the sign that it is found.
Rulerships as follows:
Aries - Mars
Taurus - Venus
Gemini - Mercury
Cancer - Moon
Leo - Sun
Virgo - Mercury (some also assign other non-planetary bodies too)
Libra - Venus
Scorpio - Pluto (old ruler is Mars)
Capricorn - Saturn
Aquarius - Saturn and the new ruler Uranus both co-rule. Some ignore Uranus
Pisces - Jupier and the new ruler Neptune both co-rule. Some ignore Neptune

From what I understand it actually seems to be more of a rule to ignore the traditional rulers than the modern..? Most astrologers and people interested in astrology seems to be generally comfortable with the modern rulers and take the traditional ones as second-hand choices.
Personally though I can see where saturn comes in with aquarius for instance (partly because uranus in itself is more fiery in its influence than aquarius as a sign, aquarius can have a bit of a saturn-like streak). Also the other traditional rulers fit to certain extents as well but still not as well as the modern.
However I've tried out theories myself on what planet could be linked to what sign, and I sometimes can see how uranus is linked to the sign gemini. I still asign mercury to gemini but I've considered uranus for gemini. Most astrologers like Paul says consider virgo to have another ruler but personally I don't, I think mercury is inclined to the intellectual seriousness that virgo has.

Are you doing a disposit tree? You will get different answers about planetary rulerships from various astrologers, so you will need to figure out on your own which school of thought you follow - old school or new school. -

Re: Rulership
Tue, November 3, 2009 - 12:36 AMactually yess, i was drawing a disposit tree.. but the thing is, i am not sure about new school and old school..
pisces to my perception is ruled by neptune (instead of jupiter)
but aquarius looks more like a combination of saturn and uranus
scorpio also looks like a mars-pluto combination to me...
If use my own chart:
ASC 0gemini
sun 4leo
moon 13cancer
Mercury 0virgo
Venus 15leo
Mars 9scorpio
Jupiter 4capricorn
Saturn 9scorpio
Uranus 9saggitarius
neptune 29saggitarius
pluto 29libra
Chrion 7Gemini
if i draw it out.. Sun, moon and mecury are in their own signs... therefor not ruled by another planet
mercury rules ASC/Chiron, and then moon stands alone...
my sun rules venus, venus rules pluto, and pluto disposits the rest of the planets...(if pluto is seen as ruler of scorpio, that is)

Re: Rulership
Tue, November 3, 2009 - 12:57 AMI would say Mars is also in its own rulership, especially since yours is a night chart. Scorpio is Mars' traditional ruler at night.
You have a lot of planets in their own rulership. I don't think I've seen so many. You also have several that are accidentally dignified by house placement.
Most people don't realize the true potential of their rulership planets until they are older (some say around age 60). But, for the most part, these planets don't answer to anyone and act in their purest form. It's like an A-list actor playing in a role that he is most famous for. The bad part is that no one says "no" to the A-list actor, even when he is being self-centered, egocentric, etc. He is master of his own domain. This gives you a very strong personality, to say the least. -

Re: Rulership
Tue, November 3, 2009 - 3:00 AMso you would say mars rules scorpio in my case? it empowers saturn i would says since mars and saturn are in scorpio but mars is stronger (like if they would be in libra for example, where mars would be weak)
so wich are accidentally dignified by house placement, to your opinion?
and yes, i have a very strong personality...but with few planets on the upperside of my chart, i have difficulties in thinking through what i want to become, achieve career and future-wise...... also , i have few resources($) and am responsible for several people's wellbeing.. not always that easy (fixed squares i guess)
