SAN FRANCISCO - The California Supreme Court has overturned a gay
marriage ban in a ruling that would make the nation's largest state
the second one to allow gay and lesbian weddings.

The justices' 4-3 decision Thursday says domestic partnerships are not
a good enough substitute for marriage. Chief Justice Ron George wrote
the opinion.
The city of San Francisco, two dozen gay and lesbian couples and gay
rights groups sued in March 2004 after the court halted San
Francisco's monthlong same-sex wedding march.
The case before the court involved a series of lawsuits seeking to
overturn a voter-approved law that defines marriage as a union between
a man and a woman.
With the ruling, California could become the second state after
Massachusetts where gay and lesbian residents can marry.
"What happens in California, either way, will have a huge impact
around the nation. It will set the tone," said Geoffrey Kors,
executive director of the gay rights group Equality California.
California already offers same-sex couples who register as domestic
partners the same legal rights and responsibilities as married
spouses, including the right to divorce and to sue for child support.
It's therefore unclear what additional relief state lawmakers could
offer short of marriage if the court renders the existing ban
unconstitutional.
A coalition of religious and social conservative groups is attempting
to put a measure on the November ballot that would enshrine
California's current laws banning gay marriage in the state constitution.
The Secretary of State is expected to rule by the end of June whether
the sponsors gathered enough signature to qualify the marriage
amendment, similar to ones enacted in 26 other states.

Francisco, two dozen gay and lesbian couples, Equality California and
another gay rights group in March 2004 after the court halted San
Francisco's monthlong same-sex wedding march that took place at Mayor
Gavin Newsom's direction.

I am glad. I believe that gays should be allowed to marry each other.
No religious, moral, ethical beliefs should keep gays from being married to each other
just like they should not keep people of different ethnic groups from
being married to each other. I believe in complete civil rights for all.
Gay marriage is a civil right.
I say that this fits with Jupiter square Eris with 50 minutes of arc

Re: California's top court overturns gay marriage ban
Thu, May 15, 2008 - 6:40 PMwell thank god for that. I never got how people can be so judgemental on others. I was always taught to look past social norms, physical appearence, and the superficial. I think things will get better in the furture regarding gay rights. For god sakes its 2008. Is being Gay still a taboo?

Re: California's top court overturns gay marriage ban
Thu, May 15, 2008 - 7:21 PMI notice a retrograde Jupiter in trine to Venus in Aries as the most noticeable and active indication here.
Also important is the integrity of fire signs regardless of Tropical or sidereal Zodiacs.
I do not have the exact time but I would guess it came as Mars and the South node were close to the ascendant.
This puts a powerful retro Jupiter in the 6th (vanquishing and enemy) in trine to the indicator or relationships / Love (Venus).
A prominent decision with far reaching impact on relationships (10th house).
It overturns the earlier ban on same sex marriages that San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom initiated in 2004. Research into that event and exact date / time would be interesting.
Also the RETRO quality of Jupiter. I find retrograde planets in transit to be quite hard to predict, but one thing I have seen is it tends to reverse things.. not always for the bad.
I am speaking mainly of Jupiter and Saturn.
For instance if something negative started very quickly after one of them went direct, often its retrograde motion will reverse it. I have seen this a few times with health things, especially the "illness" Cancer and retrograde showing remission.
Also, just in general, i have noted many times where retro will reverse things. Like this, reversing a decision. -
