going back to cafeastrology.com, I payed more attention to their articles on the Nodal Axis in a chart, and I came across an interesting approach:
"Ruler of the North and South Nodes
For further insight into the lessons of the Nodes of the Moon, look to the ruling planet of each Node's sign. For example, to shed further light onto our South Node tendencies, look to the planet that rules the sign of our South Node, and determine its sign. This sign position will suggest how we tend to act out our South Node tendencies. Similarly, the sign of the ruler of our North Node will show us how we might go about learning the lessons inherent in our North Node.
An example: If my South Node is in Libra, the ruling planet of Libra is Venus. My Venus is in Leo. Because the South Node is in Libra, I may have a tendency to fall back on partnerships and to fear standing alone, thus getting myself tangled up in co-dependent, imbalanced relationships. How do I do this? In a Leonine way! This adds an element of pride to the whole picture. I may hold on to my relationships with pleasure, priding myself on my ability to be loyal and stick with a partner; nevertheless, my relationships suffer from my inner imbalance unless I learn the lessons of my North Node in Aries.
If my North Node is in Aries, the ruling planet of Aries is Mars, and my Mars is in Sagittarius. Because my North Node is in Aries, I need to learn to develop my ability to stand alone, to act on impulse, and to feel good about myself whether I am in a partnership or not. The Sagittarius flavor suggests how I might do that. Perhaps I might need to travel away from my homestead in order to learn that I can stand on my own; perhaps I need to broaden my perspective in relationships by broadening my personal/physical horizons; perhaps I need to get away somehow, be adventurous, in order to learn to love myself and to develop more confidence in myself. I need to tap into my more bold, outgoing, adventurous, and intuitive personality (Sagittarius) in order to define myself and build my confidence (Aries)."

This might be especially useful for people who have their Nodes in opposite energies by sign and house, like me.
I have South Node in Virgo, in the 12th house, and North Node in Pisces, in the 6th house. Now, please correct me, if I'm rushing into conclusions, but this reinforces the idea that astrology is not part of what I should be doing with my life, despite my belief in its efficiency.
Mercury, which rules my South Node, is in 3 degrees Pisces, conjunct my North Node(and Vertex, but I don't know what that could show)! I tend to interpret this as a warning that I tend to get fatalistic in view, and believe that my life already has a set purpose(ruler of south node conjunct North Node).
South Node being in the 12th also tends o suggest I never got to do anything practical with my talent in past lives. Now, Neptune, ruler of my North Node(friggin' complicated nodal axis, this one!) is in Capricorn, almost exactly conjunct Saturn in Capricorn..in other words, it's a very Capricornian Neptune. And, again, Saturn is the biggest DIY influence in astrology, if I'm not mistaken. Capricorn doesn't take anything for granted, and believes in building its own destiny.
So, judging by this, the way to "reach the Promised Land"-lol-is by taking everything in my own hands, and just work on making it happen, instead of getting caught up in worries, or imaginary complications that are not even there...as opposed to embracing blind faith and indulging in activities that bring no concrete results..right?
And if this were indeed true, does it not exclude study of astrology?

Re: Interesting info on the Moon's Nodes
Thu, October 1, 2009 - 3:33 PMMantis... lol
You are probably right with your interpretation... and thanks for the article.
I have my NN in Aries in the 12th house by Placidus (11th every other major system) at 25 degrees. The ruler, Mars, is in Capricorn. So I'd suspect that my "path" to my purpose or higher expression would be similar to yours in that practical and concrete results is how I achieve that higher expression, and Mars, it would be by DOING things to get those results. I've always interpreted the 12th house NN in Aries and confidence in anonymity... sacrificing the "self" in some way, first by embracing the demands of the self in order to release them.
South Node in Libra, 6th house. Ruler Venus is in Virgo (which reflects the 6th house). So, to me, that sorta says that I try to be of service whenever I can, to fall back on being a subordinate for the sake of harmony, feeling loved, and having peace (Venus). Fighting, expressing Mars energy and aggression is difficult. So, basically, the biggest challenge is to go from the subordinate to the leader (Aries, Capricorn, Mars), but not for the sake of being a leader, but for some greater good without any credit (12th house). This is really hard for Mars/Aries to accept (oh yes it is). Saturn is also in my 6th house conjunct my Descendant and square my Venus, so there is great fear of failure in this situation which leads me to give authority to others even though I have the capability to handle things myself.
I don't know if you study or use draconic astrology at all, but it is supposed to a reflection of the individual's "core" by bringing the Moon's nodes to 0 point Aries. It is interesting to me that in my draconic chart, the Midheaven is in Capricorn conjunct my Mars. The idea of the sign of the ruling planet for the Nodes of the moon is pretty much reinforced in my Draconic, so the midheaven is the "highest "achievement" in material terms, and it is connected with my NN ruler, and the planet Venus associated with my South Node is also conjunct my IC. What's unfriendly is that my NN and SN are square my Sun/Moon opposition in Cancer/Capricorn, with the SN widely conjunct Pluto (which also squares my Sun/Moon). Everything just has to be so hard! lol
But... I should just start doing things, like you, and stop worrying about all this (Virgo and Pisces both seem to like worrying a lot don't they?). -

We have a LOT of overlap in regards to our Nodes (looks like born a few months apart of the same year, with our Ascendants conjunct), so it was very useful to read your interpretation of them.
My NN is also in 12th House Aries (though 29.59 degrees) and my Mars is in Capricorn (also 8th House).
My SN is in 6th House Libra, but my Venus is Taurus, rather than Virgo.
And I have Saturn conjunct my Sagittarius Descendant, as well.
Much of your description seems very applicable to me, as well, except I have the Venusian qualities of our South Node placement emphasized, rather than the Virgoan qualities (by way of the ruler). I like how you described a North Node (Aries/12th/Capricorn Mars) goal as becoming a leader for the sake of a greater good.
I also have my North Node conjunct my (Taurus) Sun, which adds a bit of complication to the idea of not taking leadership roles with ego-reinforcement as a goal, but I think my general 12th House emphasis helps me be pretty comfortable with standing in the background. Of course, until my Sun/Pluto opposition starts to flip out about what power it's given up through all that helping and compromising and grows unfairly resentful, which causes my self-centeredness that I forget is abundant (since it's hidden) to flare up.
SN in 6th House Libra also has a funny thing about liking to maintain relationship harmony, while also quietly dissecting the relationship minutely to identify any potential problems with it, which can unconsciously cause problems, sometimes. It sort of wants to figure out problem areas in order to immediately smooth them out, but fretting over 'problems' that aren't really big deals just as often results in those problems growing larger. I usually avoid initiating conflict and am pretty laid back, but sometimes I over-analyze relationships until I find things to worry over and those worries manifest as sort of strange behavior on my part. And, again, either bringing up things that shouldn't matter in order to try to 'solve' them or, alternately, becoming avoidant. I suppose just being more self-reliant and confident in the flow of things could help prevent me from obsessing over the minute dissection of relationships to their (and my) detriment.
But, yes, it seems as if a general direction for our Nodal placements is self-directed assertiveness in spiritual or selfless pursuits (or 'confidence in anonymity,' as you said, more concisely). -

Re: Interesting info on the Moon's Nodes
Thu, October 1, 2009 - 5:08 PMwhoa, that's pretty neat. You're insights are great... over analyzing a relationship at the same time as being laid-back... guilty of that one here.... though the Venus Virgo could also be part of that. I also end up compromising and then feeling resentful, but a lot of it is unconscious... or I push it down because I don't agree with those feelings.
It's funny how the themes of a chart can repeat themselves... a 12th house Sun in Taurus, ruled by Venus, conjunct Mars-ruled Aries NN just sounds like a recipe for tension, and Pluto opposing the Sun just brings it out into the real world as Pluto is a generational influence (although I see you have Mars and Neptune in your court). Even though my Sun isn't on the NN directly, it's still making a similar ego statement by squaring the NN and Pluto.
I don't know about you, but from what I've read about my house placements, a lot of it keeps suggesting that I might be involved with backroom dealing or illegal activities, or some other kind of mysterious or hidden things. 12th house can also indicate stuff like that especially when the 8th house (where our Mars/Neptune is) is connected to it, even though a spiritual ideal would be the best route for the 12th house to symbolize. My first job was working for Social Security, a very 6th/12th house organization dealing with other people's money (8th)... then I was threatened with mitigation by a private university (the school conducted illegal activities, too) and unwittingly became a "martyr" for the students that started an uprising which lead to the resignation/firing of a few of the administration. So I can see this stuff in my actual life pretty clearly lol. Now if only I can kill the ego that comes with that. :/ -

Welcome to the world of planets as house rulers.
Your astrological life will never be the same.
Whatever influences the 7th house RULER will usually have more impact on your relationship partners than a planet in the 7th house (the relationship itself).
for example. -

Re: Interesting info on the Moon's Nodes
Fri, October 2, 2009 - 9:42 AMAgree - it definitely does seem like Venus in Virgo would enhance the over-analysis stuff. My Taurus Venus sure enhances my laziness, but I still dissect excessively (probably doesn't help that I also have my Scorpio Moon in the 6th). I've always wondered about Virgo Venuses. My laid-back Libra step-mom has one, and she certainly doesn't come across as nit-picky, but she is very observant about people's natures (and she makes art in a very Virgo-y fashion, particularly in that she's interested in the details of how different materials and techniques function).
Your analysis of my chart themes is really intriguing! I hadn't made the Venus/Mars conflict connection in regards to my Sun/NN conjunct!
Oh, wow, NN square Sun AND Pluto?
I've definitely read some 'backroom dealing' type insinuations about my house placements, too, but I have no stories as interesting as yours!! -

Re: Interesting info on the Moon's Nodes

Thanks!

Re: Interesting info on the Moon's Nodes

I always was under the impression that the house was a little bit more personally relevant, since the Nodes move pretty slowly slowly. But someone correct me if I'm wrong! Of course, I'm sure both sign and house are important factors to look at, even if the sign is somewhat generational (or do they move too quickly to be considered generational?). -

Re: Interesting info on the Moon's Nodes
Fri, October 2, 2009 - 10:43 AMThe outer planets (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) are generational, so looking at the house and aspects, would indicate the significance to the individual. The inner planets are personal, so as the Nodes relate to ones Sun/Moon, I would say that the house and sign are equally important.
"In astrology, the Moon's Nodes (the Dragon's Head and Tail) are not planets in the strict astronomical sense, but rather sensitive points on the ecliptic, where the pathway of the Moon crosses the course of the Sun. The ecliptic is the path of the Sun through the heavens as seen from the Earth and projected onto the Celestial Sphere. The pathway of the Moon around the Earth is not the same as the ecliptic, so the body of the "energy dragon" is the fourth-dimensional path of the Moon by declination, as she weaves her web around the earth. "
www.astrologycom.com/nodes.html
My N Node in 11th house, Cancer would indicate my soul's expression of growth in the area of Home, Family, Community and Humanity, perhaps using intuition, innovative ideas or science. I have a strong Moon and Uranus to help me out here!
OR
I might make myself a home in a scientific community, creating relationships with other, oddball revolutionaries!
While both avenues are appealing,I think for me, the first is more likely... -

Re: Interesting info on the Moon's Nodes
Fri, October 2, 2009 - 10:56 AMAh, glad you corrected. I looked at how quickly they move again (which I should have previously!) and it isn't really all that slow. Makes sense that sign and house would both be about equally important, after all. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Interesting info on the Moon's Nodes
Fri, October 2, 2009 - 11:10 AMI am wondering about what effect the planets/stars have when aspecting the nodes. My S Node is conj. Mercury (T Pluto will soon apply as well), my N Node is conj. fixed star Sirius.
The question asked about transits to nodes, as well as Nodes transiting natals is interesting too.
The N Node recently Conj my Sun, and other recent transits seem to have placed me in a position of growth in the N Node direction, should I have the guts to carry it out! Jupiter is giving a big boost there too.

Re: Interesting info on the Moon's Nodes
Fri, October 2, 2009 - 10:21 AM
I have switched to whole sign houses now
I am skeptical of other house systems, especially Placidus and Koch which are useless in latitudes higher than 66 degrees.
I used to use Placidus.
instead of my Aquarius/Leo Nodes being in 5th and 11th houses.
They are in the 6th and 12th houses.
so strong emphasis on service/health
I am not using modern rulerships any more
I am only using traditional rulerships
so dispositor of my North Lunar Node in Aquarius is 5th/6th Saturn which is retrograde in Gemini in 10th house oppose my 4th/7th house ruler Jupiter and Neptune in Sagittarius in 4th, and square my Moon.
it reflects my service in the military. I was in the navy. It also reflects my mom's health problems and my helping her out. It also indicates my relationships being highly karmic with great challenges. I want to be married and have children, but there are obstacles with that.
retrograde transneptunian Varuna conjunct my Saturn adds the element of metaphysical orientation as well as evolutionary intensified lessons, experiences.
dispositor of my South Lunar Node in Leo is 12th house ruler Sun in Scorpio in 3rd which is trine my Moon in 7th. This suggests past karma involving communications, siblings in connection to women, mother, relationships.
Retrograde 5th/6th house Saturn quincunx Sun, and that can indicate restrictions involving self expression as well as father.
Transneptunians, Ixion and Quaoar conjunct my Sun adds the element of metaphysical orientation and evolutionary intensified experiences
4th/7th house Jupiter in Sagittarius in 4th sextile/trine my Lunar Nodes, and so my karmic past/lessons involving expansion, religion, teaching as well as domestic environment, family, relationships, partnerships
retrograde transneptunian, Eris in Aries in 8th sextile/trine my Lunar Nodes, and so my karmic past/lessons involving diversity/divergence, controversy, equality matters
as well as sex, death, shared resources, mysteries, research as well as metaphysical orientation and evolutionary intensifed lessons.
That theme is exacerbated with my Sun conjunct the South Eris Node in Scorpio.
retrograde centaur, Chiron in Aries in 8th is sextile/trine my lunar nodes ,and so my karmic past/lessons involving teaching, healing, holistic stuff, and being a maverick
the centaur,Asbolus is oppose/conjunct my lunar nodes, and so my karmic past/lessons involving divination
my 12th house ruler Sun in Scorpio in 3rd square my Lunar Nodes, and so strong karmic issues overall that involve self expression, father, communications, siblings as well as institutions, mysticism, secrets, hidden things
My Midheaven/Imum Coeli axis in Gemini in 10th/Sagittarius in 4th sextiles/trine my Lunar Nodes, and so my karmic past/lessons involving aim of life, domestic environment, overall roots of my being
the Neptune Nodes in Leo in 12th/Aquarius in 6th oppose my lunar nodes, and so my karmic past/lessons involving collective karma involving imagination, mysticism, idealism
My Uranus in Libra in 2nd trines/sextiles my Lunar nodes, and so my karmic past/lessons involving independence, innovation as well as security, finances, self worth
My Ceres in Leo in 12th oppose/conjunct my lunar nodes, and so my karmicc past/lessons involving nurturing, mother but also self expression and institutions, mysticism, secrets, hidden things
in Right Ascension:
My Mercury square the lunar nodes, and so my karmic past/lessons involving communications
