Hi folks!
today's my birthday! Weeee! I was playing on astro.com last night, and figured out how to do a solar return chart. i find it really fascinating - I read about it on bob Marks website and thought I'd try it out.
What insights do any of you have on the significnce of the solar return chart? Mr. Marks says it applies most strongly to the first six months following your birthday every year. Also, I've posted mine in my pictures as "solar return 2006", and it looks like I have a stellium in my 6th house in Scorpio. does this mean I'll have to overwork this year? Or work too much?
thanks for any info!
Bets

Re: Solar Return chart
Mon, November 20, 2006 - 1:13 PMHappy Birthday, Bettie,
The most important thing in a Solar Return is, of course, the Sun.
First, the house the SR Sun falls in. This shows where the main focus will be for the year ahead.
Second, any aspects that are made to the SR Sun. These are especially important because anything that aspects the SR Sun makes the identical aspect to the natal Sun. If you can imagine the Solar Return Chart as a snapshot of the year ahead, these aspects will carry throughout the coming year.
Third in importance, in my opinion, are any planets in the SR chart that make close aspects to natal planets. I would also include the SR Asc. and MC as aspecting points here.
Only after looking at the above would I look at the other planets in the SR chart, and any aspects they make. If you see an aspect in the SR chart that you also have natally, it is of added significance, even if it does not contact a natal planet. For example, let us say you have Mercury conjunct Mars in Sagittarius natally, and the SR chart has Mercury conjunct Mars in Scorpio. Even if the SR conjunct does not aspect your chart in any way, it is still of particular importance to you in the year ahead, showing you will be called upon to utilize your Mercury/Mars quite a bit.
I do not agree that the SR chart is strongest in the first 6 months.....it covers the whole year. But you can do transits to the SR chart for additional information as the year progresses.
If your SR chart has a stellium in the 6th house, then there is going to be a great deal of focus on work, and/or health, and/or refining your basic skills. It does not mean necessarily overwork, only that there will be a lot of attention paid to the work arena. -

Re: Solar Return chart
Tue, November 21, 2006 - 1:33 PMthats interesting zane
i went back and looked at SR charts for the past few years and your words seems to hold true.
dec. 02 I got into a relationship, and the sun in the SR chart for the 03 was in the 5H
last year sucked royally, and the sun was conjunct pluto in the 8H ~
this upcoming year has sun conjunct pluto in the 5H (along with mercury and venus), with saturn trining the sun from the 1H in leo.
do you look at where the ascendent is placed for confluence?

Tue, November 21, 2006 - 1:49 PM"do you look at where the ascendent is placed for confluence?"
I'm not sure what you mean, marcia, would you care to elaborate on your question?
The Ascendant is significant.....it does set the tempo for the year. Cardinal signs rising tend to make a more active year, going after new challenges. Fixed signs rising tend to be years more appropriate for building upon the past. And Mutable signs rising tend to be more appropriate for tying up ends, finishing things up.
The Ascendant is especially significant if it is within a degree or so of a natal planet. -

Re: Solar Return chart
Tue, November 21, 2006 - 3:19 PMmarcia,
First, the SR chart where Leo rises is always a special year, because the chart is centered on the Sun, and the Sun rules Leo. This is often a time that the person feels it is his/her year.....and it is especially a good time to make one's wants known. It's also a rather creative year, and if as you say your Sun is in the 5th, it would be all the moreso for you. -

woo hoo - after a SR sun/pluto conjunction in the 8H year, that is especially good news.
;-)
thanks zane

Re: Solar Return chart
Tue, November 21, 2006 - 9:47 AMHi Bettie, there's a helpful article over at www.llewellynjournal.com/article/391 to interpret the solar return. I'm a beginner and don't know much about solar returns, but if we take a look at your's, maybe we can do a very basic overall theme to your year by looking at this article. Fun for practice and maybe someone who knows can comment and correct.
One thing to look at is to see if most of the planets in the upper part of the chart or the lower parts of the chart. If in the upper, you'll have a more extroverted year, motivated by the outside and your need to interact/grow with others. If most of the planets are below the horizon, you'll be working on inner growth and change. With that stellium in the 6th, I would say you're leaning towards the inner core, skills to hone, your abilities to eventually pull out and employ in your dealings in the outside world which will be sooner than later because this stellium is based in the 6th house, a cadent house. When planets are grouped in this placement, it is as if you've got a little more rippening to do before you bear fruit. And in this case, it has to deal with your skills and attitudes towards work and your health. Perhaps this year would be a good time to focus on work goals and fitness goals because you have the energy behind you like a tail-wind. (astrologers, or anybody else who knows this stuff - I welcome your corrections as it is the best way to learn and I don't want to give misinformation).
Placement of right and left is significant as well. If you've got a majority of planets on the left of your solar return, the article says you will have a "greater capacity to take control, to lead and to initiate changes." I've also heard that you will have to work for what you want. If the planets are on the right, I've heard that things will come to you easily, they will flow. The article states that with most of the planets on the right, "other people and their interests will be an important consideration in your decisions and activities."
You've cleary got most of your planets on the right side of your chart. If we sythesize this information, we could say that although you're internally focused this year (health; service; work), that your interactions with other will be significant. There is a collaboration between your inner direction and goals, and the people around you. In this collaboration, there is a natural flow, a current that you can ride to fully manifest the energies available to you this year.
One last look. From the article,
"The Solar Return rising sign should be carefully considered since the personality will take on many of the characteristics of the sign, and endeavors will show an expression of the attributes of that sign. Also, in judging the doorway of the Ascendant, find the natal house that holds the Solar Return rising degree. The natal house that is brought to the Solar Return Ascendant should be given special consideration. Since the Ascendant is an area of energy manifestation, conditions and environment provide an ideal outlet for events and issues associated with this natal house. The people, issues and affairs of that house will occupy your attention to a great extent."
So your solar return rising sign is Gemini. Natally, you've got Gemini at the IC, and is your 4th house ruler. Here's a stab at this (please remember that I'm a beginner and welcome feedback or corrections for Bet's sake :-): The 4th is your roots, connected to the 10th, your fruits. It seems like this could be a time of deep restlessness, where you're trying on new identities, seeing how they fit, and you're so close to realizing a breakthrough that is connected to your attitude to work or how you manifest your skills in the world, what you bring to the table (6th) and contribute to the world and how other people see you (10th). You might need a change at this point, even change location or explore by traveling, but you're in the right place to do this (you've got the energy behind you). Use your communication skills as they'll serve you well. Also, if you pay attention to your body, and take good care of yourself during this time (possibly establishing some kind of conditioning routine if you don't already have one, or paying attention to nutrition), you will be better equipped to make sound decisons for yourself that you can commit to.
Anyway, do look at the article. There's an example reading and at the end, you'll find brief descriptions the energy a planet brings.
Just two questions that surfaced when I was looking through solar return interpretations:
1. True or False: The solar return begins to influence a person three months before their birthday, and generally last the entire year.
2. True or False (paraphrased from the article): In the solar return, if the Sun is in an angular house, the beginning of the year will bring the greatest activity. If it is in a succedent house, the middle portion brings the most productivity. If in a cadent house, the last part of the year may show the most movement. However, a prominence of planets in one of the three sectors may modify this.

Re: Solar Return chart
Tue, November 21, 2006 - 11:49 AMWowee! Thanks so much Zane and Juanita! This is really interesting stuff and both of your insights are very accurate for me:) My day job just laid me off, and I will be able to concentrate solely on my music career for awhile. I've been working on it very hard over the last year and it's just starting to bear a little fruit. Makes sense that there's more work to focus on. I might be traveling to Europe soon too. Also, re: health I just got a year's worth of yoga for a great price! so I find that coincidental:) I guess I was a little deflated though, when I saw the 6th House, because I'd like to explore a relationship this year, but with Uranus in my 10th, Midheaven in Aquarius and Pluto in my 7th, it doesn't look like a very grounded year for that!
The solar return issue is fascinating to me when I think back on all the birthdays I've had, and how each year has had it's different focus. I'm curious to go back to years that were prosperous, or challenging, and see if there's any correlation. Also, Bob Marks says on his website that you can influence your birthday and the upcoming year by traveling to a location on your birthday that creates a good arrangement of planets and houses. I think thats so funny! For instance if I was in Europe yesterday, my stellium would've fallen in my 2nd House instead of the 6th!
I will definately look at this article later today. -

Bettie, if you do go back, take a look at Jupiter and Venus and see if the text pasted below (from www.llewellynjournal.com/article/391) has any validity in your experience:
"When there are benefic planets on the angles of a return chart, a good period can usually be anticipated. These are the traditional Jupiter and Venus, or greater and lesser fortunes, and also the Sun, unless it is badly afflicted. If any one of these is on an angle and making positive aspects, a fortunate return period can be anticipated. In general, these three bodies can provide health, wealth and good times in amounts relative to a summary of the chart.
"If, however, there are badly afflicted benefics on the angles, it can show all kinds of upsetting circumstances, quite often indicating a health problem, distress or grief. Venus against Jupiter especially indicates grief if combined with similar indicators. Venus against Jupiter without other major afflictions usually shows excess of some sort. Jupiter against Mars can show accidents, carelessness, extravagance, or going overboard in general."

Re: Solar Return chart
Tue, November 21, 2006 - 12:59 PM>1. True or False: The solar return begins to influence a person three months before their birthday, and generally last the entire year.
In my opinion, the essence of this statement is true, but.....
Nothing happens in a vaccuum. Your Solar Return is not a light switch, so suddenly you enter into a new year and wham!, conditions change.
Conditions described in the Return for the year ahead are in part based on things that have been happening. If Saturn was beginning to trine your Sun the month before your birthdate, and is almost exact in your Solar Return, the return captures that Saturn trine Sun for the year ahead...but you began to feel it beforehand.
However, it is not a cut and dried 3 months before the birthday. If you have Mars square your Sun in your solar return, this has only been coming on for weeks before the return, not months. If you have Pluto in aspect to your Sun during the return, you may have been experiencing this aspect for a lot more than 3 months.
In all of this, we are talking about planetary aspects. I'll mention the solar return houses in a bit.
I've never seen this apply. The house of the Sun IS one of the most important factors in a solar return, but it shows the area of life the Sun will focus on, not the section of the year.
Now, as far as choosing the location for your Solar Return:
Yes, you can do this, and with some clear planning, you can shape the year ahead. I know one astrologer who does this every year. He chooses the place where his Solar Return will give him the best financial situation, and spends the days around his birthdate in that location.
The key here, though, is in choosing the houses.
Keep in mind that the relationship between the Sun and planets will be the same everywhere in the world on your birthdate. If you have Sun conjunct Mars in the return at your birth place, you will have Sun conjunct Mars in any city you go to around the world for your birthdate. You can't change aspects.
What you can change is the houses they fall in. You can choose to strengthen positive aspects, and put difficult aspects in a more background setting.
So let us say you do your solar return and have Sun trine Jupiter this year. Where you are living now has the Sun in the 12th, Jupiter in the 3rd. You might spend a lot of time on your own here, although putting your ideas onto paper may be an excellent option. BUT, let us say you go somewhere where you move the Sun into the 11th, and Jupiter moves in the 2nd. You may find that your finances expand here, and you are greatly involved in group activities.....although you may also find that you spend a lot more than you would have had you stayed in the first location.
