Jupiter.
The planet that relates to amongst other things, spirituality, foreign affairs, long distance travel, higher education, grandiosity and too much is never enough.
How can we resolve all these seemingly disparate connotations and what does Jupiter do for us? How does Jupiter relate to the individual in each of the elements?
You know the drill by now!

Re: Back to Basics Series - Jupiter
Thu, June 25, 2009 - 8:49 AMJupiter is my *favorite*! When studying astrology in my 20's, I ran across the glyph for Jupiter & immediately recognized it ~ up until that point, I didn't know why this one memory from my childhood had been 'stuck' in my head:
I was in 3rd grade & I remember this event at school, like it was yesterday ~ it had always confused me ~ what was so significant abut it, that I remembered this little exchange above & beyond so many others? My class was working on putting little circuits together ~ we had batteries, wires, switches & little lightbulbs ~ I have always been good at science & I completed my circuit in no time, then spent the remainder of the class helping other kids ~ my friend (who I now know is a Pisces sun, but at that point in my life I knew nothing of astrology) handed me a folded up note & when I opened it, I noticed that she had written the number "4" on the paper ~ there was some other stuff ~ but I just couldn't take my eyes off that strange "4" ~ it was curvy, like I had never seen a "4" written ~ although I could still identify it as such ~ I stood there & stared at it ~ it made a HUGE impression on me ~ this is where my memory ends ~ with that curvy 4 etched in my brain.
I continued to think about it for years. It wasn't until I first saw the glyph associated with Jupiter ~ I must've been about 24 ~ that I had the OMG! moment ~ Jupiter! that's what my memory is all about! In hindsight, it even makes sense that in 4th grade, the assignment was to pick a planet, do some research & make a paper mache model ~ of course, I chose Jupiter.
It's funny the way certain memories stick in one's mind.
In my late 20's, after studying a bunch of astrology, I came to accept that I have been *psychic* my whole life, but as a child, I did my best to suppress it. There was something about Jupiter's glyph that wouldn't be suppressed, tho & that is the *feeling* I associate with Jupiter ~ expansion, happiness, connection beyond direct awareness ~ all rolled up into a sum, greater than its parts ~ undeniable.
Jupiter has always been there for me ~ even when I wasn't there for myself.
love all-ways,

Re: Back to Basics Series - Jupiter
Thu, June 25, 2009 - 9:51 AMJupiter as an Uplifting Force of Expanding Consciousness
Any experience that genuinely expands consciousness -- such as travel to a foreign culture or doing something you've never done before -- can boost your confidence with a new perspective. This uplifting force of consciousness expansion is well symbolized by astrological Jupiter, especially when it involves taking risks and leaps of faith beyond what is known and familiar to extend our perspective. By growing more aware, we develop a sensitivity to what matters and what doesn't, what is worth caring for and what isn't.
The more consciousness expands, the more conscience has a chance to develop. Through our own perceptions we come to a personal impression of truth -- our truth -- and form the beliefs to confirm and maintain these truths. Over time these beliefs can easily crystallize into fixed assumptions, expectations, ideals, and dogmas around specific issues and about life in general.
If we can remain open-minded enough to new information and fresh experiences -- those that do not always conform to our previous assumptions -- we can update our perception and outgrow obsolete beliefs. We learn new ways to keep learning. If and when our minds shut down, we suffer from the bigotry of fundamentalist thinking and its painful need to be right all the time. The force of belief is never the truth but rather your perception of truth. Natal Jupiter points to where and how your truth can be known, where your own consciousness needs expanding.

According to Sherpa, maybe it's a need for expansion of consciousness and embrace of awareness of self, creative talents and energies, and the recognition of personal security found internally. I mean, I guess. That sounds right to me. lol
I have a question for you guys. I have been told "there's no such thing as a bad Jupiter aspect" do you agree with this? Is it because of Jup's expansive abilities? -

I would definitely disagree with this. Jupiter when aspecting the moon or Venus might make for someone who is a bit of aglutton for example. Jupiter says "more more more, there's never enough" when sometimes less is more! Aspecting mercury can leave someone with verbal diarrhoea, just endless waffle of no interest or importance!
To the sun can leave someone with an overinflated ego, to mars can leave someone overly explosive etc etc

planets conjunct the South node, to Kalby
Sun, June 28, 2009 - 8:31 PMKalby,
You asked:
"what about Jupiter Conjunct South Node?"
In general, planets conjunct the South node tend to hold us back in life. So any planet conjunct the South node can keep a person "stuck in the past".
In the past tense,

So what does it mean for the expansive planet to be placed where it is held back & stuck in the past? Does that just mean it is inhibited or does it act to remove some of what would otherwise be blockages? -

Jupiter in the past, to Kalby
Mon, June 29, 2009 - 9:00 AMKalby,
You asked:
"So what does it mean for the expansive planet to be placed where it is held back & stuck in the past? Does that just mean it is inhibited or does it act to remove some of what would otherwise be blockages?"
Jupiter is about "expansion", so Jupiter "stuck in the past" is OVERLY expansive about past things in some way. As Sherpa indicated, how this works depends a lot on the sign and house it is in. For example, if Aries (being) modifies Jupiter in the being house (with Jupiter conjunct the South node), the person would be "stuck" on themselves in a BIG way. They would be focusing so much on themselves they would have a very hard time focusing on Libra (relationships) modifying the North node (future goals) focused in the relationships house. In other words, they would be so "stuck on themselves" they would have a hard time focusing on those around them.
Expansively,
Tim

Sun, June 28, 2009 - 9:14 PM<<what about Jupiter Conjunct South Node?>>
Signifies a strong point of view with an innate gift or knack for taking risks but sometimes at the cost of overextending yourself. There can be a tendency to confuse yourself with your beliefs and push your dogmas as if they are universal truths. More specific information can be derived by knowing the House this Jupiter/South Node resides in.

Wow, Paul. My Jupiter has aspects to all of the planets mentioned. Lol
Derrick:
I've found that some of these "negative" aspects or characteristics of Jupiter to be motivational ( even more so than the "positeves" I.E. Trines or sextiles) . When used right they can be a great source of fulfillment and aid in the process of confidence in and expansion of ones abilities. The "problem" aspects highlight the areas that need some adjustment and with conscious effort the adjustment adds more and more to the personality. Though, the opposite is also valid.

lol they're just the negative sides to the aspect. Just countering the point that they have NO negative sides. They do. Doesn't mean you'll automatically display them.

<<My Jup is in Leo 1st/2nd cusp. According to Sherpa, maybe it's a need for expansion of consciousness and embrace of awareness of self, creative talents and energies, and the recognition of personal security found internally>>
well, according to me (hehe), this Jupiter placement can start out as a certain lack of self-awareness which can be remedied by investing more faith or belief in yourself. By doing so, the expansive nature of Jupiter can bring more awareness of self. I think Jupiter's expansive energy in any chart can be triggered by a conscious choice to invest more belief and faith in the experiences which that House represents. 1st HOuse means investing more beief in yourself and more to the point, your firsthand direct experience.
Also the sign Jupiter is in can indicate something of how we come to know truth, our truth, and this happens in 12 different ways as each of the 12 signs defines truth differently. Aries through action, Taurus through the senses, Gemini through concepts, Cancer through emotional truth, etc. -

You said:

Here's another way to look at this: create an "astro-sentence"*. You have Jupiter (expansion) in the 3rd house (thinking, also details, talking). This indicates someone who is very expansive with the details and may gather so many details they can't find the main point in them. This is Jupiter in the house of its detriment (challenging energy), which is very useful for lecturers but difficult for finding out what the lecture is actually about! ;-)
Jupiterifically,
Tim

Here is how I looked at it:
Learning through small group discussions/ networking/ informal teaching from close freinds and things.
Your chart reminds me a lot of a certain teaching style I have seen where instead of being given piles of abstract theory to regurgitate and assimilate ... a person works through questions within a group setting for a specific purpose or out of a current naturally generated intrinsic curiosity. Learning motivated by personal experiences and networking. -

A third house Jupiter may also show a sibling who is particularly Jupiterian to you, maybe a sibling that has really helped you out or broadened your mind. There's a few different ways to interpret it. Basically we're combining the symbolism of Jupiter - expansiveness, luck, conciousness raising - with the themes of the third House which Tim has mentioned and also others such as short distance travel, siblings etc etc.
